31 Dec 2017 Hike on Rangitoto Island Rangitoto Island was created about 600 years ago off the shore of Auckland by a volcanic explosion. The youth of the land makes it a place of special interest to botanists and ecologists. Pic 1) The island as seen on approach. Ferry is about 1/2 hour from downtown Auckland. 2) Lichens and moss grow all over the trees and volcanic rock, in unexpected patterns too complex for me to do justice. 3) About halfway up, with Auckland in the background. 4) The crater of the volcano itself. 5) There are no native mammals, but somehow opposums and wallabies have found their way to the island and present a big danger to the native plant species. 9-10) Lava caves -- big enough to walk/crawl through, but only on dry days. Bring a flashlight and watch your head...
