Fifty Years Ago... The F-units of Latta Yard

Back in the 1970s, there was a little set of F-units, one being a slug, that seemed to be based at Latta Yard in Jasonville, Indiana. This is along the Milwaukee Road’s Southeastern line.

We would venture over to do night shots every so often, and this one hosted a nearly-full moon. The times were very different then—with rail photographers being able to crawl all over the units, inside and out.

We would venture over to shoot night shots every so often, this night being under a nearly-full moon. The times were very different then—with us being able to crawl all over the units, inside and out; the interior shot of the F here is obviously not the slug. Number 83A is an EMD F7A that was built in 1950 for the Milwaukee.

A Cold Day in Latta Yard

Here are three pictures I took at the Milwaukee Road facility, Latta Yard, in Jasonville, Indiana. Railfans would visit this spot every so often as an F-unit or two could often be found there. I believe the B-unit here, attached to 83-C, may actually be a slug (no prime mover—just weight and traction motors).
