Kirstie Caddel’s Prayer. The story of a harrowing nineteenth century Shetland life. Widowed soon after moving to Lerwick from Northmavine in 1839 for work, Kirstie’s lifelong fight to secure the wellbeing of her children was ultimately a losing battle. It was often at Martinmas that Kirstie’s family left or were evicted from their lodgings. Ironically, each 11th November, St Martin of Tours is celebrated in Europe as a friend of children and patron of the poor because he cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm. With this background in mind, I wanted to tell Kirstie’s story in the form of a prayer for her children, spoken from beyond the grave.
