I wouldn’t worry about what you’d do with a philosophy degree but it makes sense that you would, take a look at #philosophy major success over on Students of Philosophy. If you love philosophy and do well you’ll have much more success than if you follow an ‘employable’ subject you dislike. Making life decisions shouldn’t be about economics, it should be about interest, curiosity and love. 

I never know how to describe my degree except to say it has been the most revolutionary experience of my life. If you don't know what you want to do at undergraduate then take a look at the MLA website. It's the perfect programme for people with big questions to ask and no idea what they want to do with their life.

Postcapitalism: A Guide to Our Future feels like pretty essential reading for the engaged person at the moment.

The best introduction I’ve read is Jean-Paul Sartre’s Existentialism and Humanism (online PDF). It’s a lecture he gave which means it’s written in a simple and accessible way and it’s a primary text as Sartre was a figurehead of the Existentialist movement. Otherwise there is a Very Short Introduction on Existentialism, I’ve not read it but they tend to be good.

I am familiar with it, I’ve not read it but I know the arguments it makes.

We looked at Islam when we studied the foundations of scientific thought and the beginnings of astronomy. We also looked at a number of non-Western cultural ideas in our theology/art class including aboriginal land art, Islamic gardens and Chinese landscape painting. It was all interesting and enriching and I am glad we looked away from Europe for a while. Obviously I engaged with these other cultures through the prism of the ‘Western tradition’ because I can’t do otherwise as a white, European man. That said it seemed worthwhile even if that was the case.
