Run-D.M.C.'s 2nd album was released on 21 January 1985.
Producer Larry Smith wanted to expand the definition of rap music, by introducing a more "rock" sound, which Run-D.M.C. was initially against ("The rock-rap sound was Larry Smith's vision, not Rick Rubin's. Rick changed the story, but Larry was there first. Actually, me and Run were against the guitar," D.M.C. said). Profile Records co-owner Corey Robbins suggested the title to push the idea and make it seem (at the time) "outrageous."
King of Rock would go on to sell more than 1 million copies (the third rap album to achieve that feat), would be the first rap album released on CD, and is now considered to be one of the most influential rap albums of all time.
