but she knows she could have, and she's too terrified of the answer to look for it. like imagine her looking them in the face and constantly constantly scanning back through her memory of the past hundred years, her memory of every human she cut down. did they have Kai's eyes? was their hair the same color as sloanes? is she going to walk into her friends house one day and see a picture on the mantle of someone whose throat she slit?

the not knowing is honestly worse. if she knew, she could do the noble thing and throw herself on their mercy about it, and that would be easy for her, to offer her life up as the debt paid.
