Some lantern slides from Clement Wragge's lectures on astronomy, meteorology and Theosophy, from the Auckland Museum NZ. 1890-1922
Caap, mark, kiss simons cheeks at the same time!
Hm? O-Oh- no, I- we-
[The Captain flushes slightly at the idea, about to firmly decline, but Mark grins brightly, and they've never been able to say no when he gets excited like that.]
That's so cute, wait-!
[He whispers so as not to tip Simon off before, without explanation, he pulls Simon towards the monitor, between him and the Captain, gently cradling Simon's chin with his hand to keep him steady.]
Liiiiike... this?
[Mark plants a somewhat exaggerated kiss on Simon's left cheek, and, not wanting to spoil it, the Captain hesitantly presses their lips to his right, their hands politely and shyly held behind their back as they do so.]
Mwah!

Scanned from a small glass lantern-slide. Both the saturated red of the carpet, and the largely ignored background, were choices made almost 120 years ago by the colorist charged with bringing a bit of life to the black-and-white image. In this case, the colorist was the wife of the photographer.
MATSUCHI NAKAJIMA (1851-1938) was one of Japan's great pioneering photographers of the Meiji era, and a founding member of the JAPAN PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY. He produced all formats of his day, and is said to have been a perfectionist. Today, he is perhaps best known for his beautiful series of early Lantern-slides of Japan made back in the late 19th Century --- all hand-tinted by his talented, artistic wife, SONOKO.
