A series of What If scenarios unfolding in the Lands Between after our Tarnished fails in a particular manner.
(Putting a read more because the following is long and purely fantasy What If’s which many probably aren’t interested in)
1. Our Tarnished becomes Family with Rykard during their intended audience after serving the Volcano Manor successfully, and the Great Serpent goes on to devour the Erdtree and the world thereafter, Elden Ring and all.
2. Tarnished never wakes in the Shrine of Anticipation. Godrick ambushes Malenia while she slumbers, carried by Finlay home, and is able to slay her, gaining the power of two great runes. Godrick utilises his grafting arts strengthened by Malenia’s Great Rune to usurp the power of Morgott and rules over Leyndell as its New Lord of All that is Golden. He never learns how to claim the Elden Ring for himself.
3. The Festival of Radahn fails to put him down, and even Witchhunter Gerren falls to his comrades blades. Radahn is left to rampage across the Lands Between unhindered, killing all challengers and sealing himself, even in madness, as the strongest demigod to ever exist. Ranni’s fate remains permanently sealed, as the stars never fall again.
4. Our Tarnished falls in their encounter with Rennala, an encounter that breaks the spell of the Rebirthing Rune upon Rennala’s broken heart. Rennala, realising the state of the Lands Between, takes matters into her own hands, inspired by her daughter’s wiles. Liurnia is united under the Carian Royals once more. The Cuckoo Knights and varied Conspectus of the Academy are brought to heel by the vision of her Moon Reborn. Liurnia wages war against the Erdtree and the Lord of Leyndell, with Rennala of the Full Moon intending to change Fate forever. And also scold Radagon/Marika for being a dummy.
5. Mohg bleeds our Tarnished dry, and feeds their blood to the cocooned Miquella. With his perverted Dynasty unchallenged and hidden well, Mohg succeeds in becoming Miquella’s Consort. The presence of the Formless Mother bleeds into the Lands Between fully through their pairing, and a New Order, an Order of Blood Eternal is formed. An era of blood, borne.
6. Our Tarnished fails to defeat the Lord of Leyndell. Their corpse, like so many other champions is strung upon the walls of the capital. A warning. None may achieve Lordhood. None may enter the Erdtree. Then, it happens. Godfrey returns to the Lands Between. He finds all in tattered ruins, and the Capital held together by his second born son. A cursed Omen, who loved his parents and the Golden Order above all else. The two reunite in life instead, a reunion of Father and Son. Pride. Sorrow. Joy. Anger. A flood of emotions. The pair turn toward the Erdtree where Marika is sealed. Godfrey takes Lordship once again, breaking the feeble barrier of thorns of Radagon’s design, and challenges his former wife… The one who discarded him once. He challenges her not for himself. Not for the Lands Between. But so he may save her from herself, and from the thing she fears most. He does it for his last remaining son.
7. The Tarnished reaches the Haligtree, guided by the words of their friend. A young red haired woman called Millicent. Together they clear all obstacles, and reach the lowest boughs. At the brace of the tree however, Millicent sacrifices herself for the future they wished for their mother, their sister, the flower that gave them breath. But when Malenia awakens. When she blossoms once more. The Tarnished could not overcome. As they fall in battle, a needle falls from their pouch. Malenia picks it up, familiar with the sight of Unalloyed Gold. A final gift from her brother. She knows, instinctively, what to do. The needle pierces her flesh. It blesses it beyond reason. Her mind is restored. Her pride. Her duty. Her honour. All of it is regained. Malenia steels herself. She leaves the Haligtree once more. Her brother’s return is long overdue. She can wait no longer.
8. Our Tarnished succeeds. Melina burns the Erdtree with the kindling of her body at the Forge. Our Tarnished arrives in Farum Azula. They race toward the Rune of Death, but find a familiar face instead. A Beast Clergyman, who recalls the Tarnished’s own smell. A conversation is short. A determination unbowed. A duty followed. The Tarnished is cut short by the Black Blade themself. The Rune of Death is unleashed, but, not upon the world. It is clear to Maliketh now. The Rune of Death is not even safe in a place beyond time. He has failed in his duty as Marika’s shadow once again. She will never forgive him. The Two Fingers are silent. He must confront her directly. To show reverence, and to bow his head in shame. He goes to the capital. He enters the burning Erdtree. Marika is broken. Radagon is decaying. He can neither show reverence nor shame to a being who is no longer something he was shadow too. The Black Blade is drawn. The God is Slain. Now begins, an Age of Beasts.
