Hello hello it’s me again here with the origins of Emojis, Lampposts, and Amber Alerts (TW kidnapping and murder of a child)
1. The first widespread set of emojis was created in 1999 by Shigetaka Kurita for an I-mobile company in Japan. It was designed originally to send simple messages (think a cloud emoji for a weather app or something) so they only made a set of 12 emojis. But later on they added more faces because they felt like texting couldn’t convey emotion or tone well enough, so they were like “yo bro, we gotta make faces”. And they changed a bit but now we have these 🔥😎🫘. Little did they know that 😭 and 💀 are now considered laughing lmao.
2. Originally Lampposts were used in the ancient city of Rome, which was illuminated at night by oil lamps outside of homes. The Romans tasked slaves with keeping the oil of the lamps full, lighting them at night, and extinguishing them when at daybreak. Later in the Middle Ages, "link boys" provided personal escort and light, and cities began to require citizens to hang lamps outside their homes. The first major advancements came with the introduction of gas lighting in the 18th and 19th centuries, requiring dedicated lamplighters to maintain and illuminate the lamps.
3. The Amber Alert system originated in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 1996, following the abduction and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman. Amber was outside playing on her bike with her younger brother, but was kidnapped while playing by a man in a car. Unfortunately, the police could not find her in time, and her body was found just a few miles from her home, in horrid shape. Her parents decided to work with the police to create the Amber Alert system, because maybe if more people knew to keep a look out, they could’ve found Amber before it was too late. Her case remains unsolved. My condolences to the family.
