Lamp ships are some of the fastest ships in the known the universe. Outside of their general ability to Jump without a wormhole, even the slowest ships can get up to half the speed of light, with most getting as close to it as physics allows. The delicate and colourful "sails" of a Lamp ship can be anything from a radiator, Solar sail or even micro particle Shielding. the Material and structure changing for the job.
Most True Lamp ships (those with a their own "brain") can't land or even survive a planets atmosphere, so use landers to send there units on to a surface

I got Bluu to a point where I settled on a design so have many doodles for her.
Bluu is the only one of the lamp crewmembers who has any interest in clothing outside of theyāre pure function (like Greenās bowtie). Sheās also the only one that uses gender language for herself, which is weird for lamps as the whole gender concept is very alien to them.Ā
Bluu has a rare Dual ring spacer body type, She was originally a Spacer, and kept this even when she started training to be a doctor. mostly as the things she likes to study are parasites, which are 90% of the time on the outsides of ships.Ā

A Page of doodles figuring out Lamp wings. Lamps are masters of folding membranes both for the large ships sails and for much smaller air foils. Unlike bird Lamp's don't tend to flap their wings (as it's rare one would modify themselves to have the muscle attachment points for that) instead using them more like a plane with thrush coming from a jet engine within the tail.

Lamps being a species that pretty much spend 99% of they time in space, rarely see huge bodies of liquid water. The water donāt harm them, but swimming is not something that comes naturally.Ā Ā

Green is the main communication officer on the ship, this was their job before they became self-aware and they general enjoy trying to figure out how to talk to people. This is good thing as Green was the one to figure out how to even talk to humans in their own language, in a system like mixing text to voice but if you only have want the radio signal for the voice to work from. The Bow Tie they wear being a mic, speaker and radio system they use to convert soundwaves into the more understandable radio wave.Ā
Unlike the other Lamps, Green became self-aware well still on a hivemind ship, do to this unlike most Lamps Greens first communications with any other being was humans (Mostly Hypatia and Hugo). Make it so Green tends to emote andĀ āspeakā more like a human that a Lamp, if you just heard them an a radio youād unlikely think they were a Lamp.Ā
This also makes it at times harder for Green to understand the other lamps, that look so much like them, but at times seem too alien.Ā
Last of the Lamp Crew (depending on how one counts Hugo)
Ā Dr.Periwinkle is very old for a Lamp, old enough that replacing core parts of Their biological system has a pretty high risk of killing them. So when they had a Hearts attack that took out half their hydraulic system they opted to just remove most of their Hydraulic limbs and convert their frontĀ āwingā to act as a support for the bodies system.
They took up jogging to help manage their remaining hearts (preventative medicine was a new field at the time, so this was seen as weird.) and then strength training. The improvement in live quality this gave Periwinkle lead to them switching their field of study to Preventative and repair version the more common replace an remove that is more common in Lamp medical fields. They are partially on Hugoās ship to study human medicine (which tends not to default to just cutting a limb off and replacing it) along with serving as the ships doctor.
They are very confused by human genders, but Their Student Bluu started to use them for Herself so they have been trying to get better at it.

For the most part Lamps donāt have the same pressures or need for clothes as Humans. Most finding the restriction of clothes really uncomfortable and annoying on their flexible bodies. Outside of some rare PPE Clothes are pretty much not a thing for hivemind lamps, so the fact all Ships have at least one auto loom and leather growing system was confusing at first to the humans studying them. Turns out textiles can make useful tools and for the speculum Lamps this tool use became used for art

This systems were mostly used instead for tool making, woven textiles are used in bags, Filters and netting for hydroponics. The two types of fibers produced are a polyester like materialĀ (that is about as breathable as polyester) and a Kevlar-like material used in strength base tasks. A ship will usually have one small auto loom that will have two settings a plain weave or hexagon net. Other weaves and things like knit fabrics are just not a thing most Shipped lamps wouldnāt even view these materials as something to make clothes out of.
Mostly do you the power in their Leathers. These Materials are grow into many shapes, functions and forms. The Leather isĀ the same cell structure as lamp skin and can be grown and shaped to do pretty much anything the Lamps need. Need a Screen? Just grown a section of the Colour-change layer on top of a light production layer. Need a circuit board? Lamp DNA can make single atom wires for all your 3d circuit board needs. This Leather can ether be tanned for strength or keptĀ āLiveā for auto repair and some functions (you do have to feed your computer sugars do to this at times). Most Lamp tack is build using systems like this and for Spectrum Lamps if they are make clothes it will be out of this too.
On to Clothes there are two main Cultural views about it one from the Shipped and the Other the Ship-less
For the Shipped Clothes are ether Costume for plays (pictured are Two common characters in Lamp theater The Singer and The Silent) or PPE all of which tends Leather to be grown into a pattern, with itās Stems formed from aĀ āglueā that makes the separate edges grown into one piece before itās tanned; leaving a seamless look. Lights and display elements are common as Lamps are very extra about there theater and the extra power draw is fine as these are not clothes meant to be worn for more them an hour.
For the Ship-less Clothes are more an everyday thing used to protect from the dust storms common to theĀ āwastelandsā outside of Greenwich (The one Lamp City). As the Name suggests these lamps donāt have Ships to call home, and with what little Living leather they can trade for are not going to waste it on clothes. These Lamps instead have a culture of weaving, taking the fluffs of a Common food crop and turning it into a range of different fabrics. They also tan the hides of parasites that is then sewn together into sheets. often in to geometric patterns.
