At the center of the Running Chicken Nebula (IC 2944) are where relatively small, clotted clouds roam. These shadowy structures are known as Bok globules, named after American astronomer Bart Bok (1906-1983) who studied them extensively. Bok globules are cold clouds of gas, molecules, and dust that are so dense they block all of the light behind them. New stars are forming inside them through the contraction of dust and molecular gas under their own gravity.
