( ft. @priest-of-rageâs Laivaan because these two are literally joined at the hip up until around the end of LWs2 )
âStill alive in there?â
Laivaanâs voice reached around the corner into the barracks and pulled Kirslyn from her memories. Sheâd been incessantly picking at a loose thread on her gloves for some time now, almost to the point of making a small hole near the edge. She exhaled sharply to focus herself, finished putting on the last few pieces of her uniform, and followed the sound of his voice, like she always did.
She didnât have far to go - he was leaning casually against the wall next to the open door, and turned to greet her with a soft smile as soon as she emerged. Her eyes immediately jumped to his own uniform - more specifically, how it wasnât the standard-issue browns and grays of hers and every other new recruitâs theyâd passed on their way in.
âDid you dye your armor?â The question was genuine but carried a knowing, teasing tone.
âWhat?â Laivaan glanced down at his vest and laughed. âOh, I guess I did it again, didnât I?â With a quick snap of his fingers, the soft lilac tones shattered as he dispelled the illusion heâd subconsciously cast on them. âAesthetics can wait at least until weâre done basic training, eh?â
With a nod, Kirslynâs gaze drifted out towards Vigil Keep, towering above them. This whole journey marked the farthest away from home either of them had been, but yet it was so grand it almost didnât feel real. Recruits now, but soon to be full-fledged Vigil Crusaders - fighting the good fight, facing down Elder Dragons, vanquishingâŚrisenâŚ
Laivaanâs hand on her wrist gently called her back to the moment, redirecting her fingers away from the loose threads on her gloves once more. She lowered her eyes to meet his stern expression, knowing what question was coming - the same question heâd been asking since the idea to enlist first struck him.
Sheâd seen his face that day, when he approached her with the idea. Sheâd seen how the spark that had faded from his eyes had come back with a vengeance as he explained to her what the Vigil was, and how he felt it was his calling to enlist, to fight for something. But not like, a Hunt-calling, heâd said. Definitely not a Valiant like you, but it just feelsâŚright. Does that seem weird?
Sheâd shook her head, not weird at all. Sheâd got caught up in his phrasing, though. A Valiant, like you. Could she still be considered a Valiant if sheâd lost her chance to complete her Hunt? Would she just live with the gnawing compulsion and guilt forever? She didnât want to be alone with her thoughts. She didnât want to be alone at all. So sheâd smiled, put on an excited expression, and told him what a great idea it was, and how she wanted to come with him.
âHey,â His voice was a perfect echo of all the times heâd asked since that day. âAre you sure you want to do this?â
She couldnât explain herself in a way that would ease his worries, and she didnât want to see that spark leave his eyes again. So she smiled, put on an excited expression, and grabbed his hand.
âToo late to turn back now!â She grinned, leading him up towards the ramparts where their fellow recruits were beginning to fall into formation.

Teekzi and Laivaanâs first few days in Sirenâs Landing were...interesting, to say the least. :P
Things that canât be conveyed fully via screenshot:
- me summoning an updraft by yelling DWAYNA to the heavens
- us getting rekt repeatedly by either sharks or magma elementals
- us getting really confused about the 3 parables in the Boat Caveâ˘
- us venturing forth for Spencers 3 times because we kept screwing up a jump to an Abaddon parable
- us aimlessly scrambling all over hunting down all the written stuff while having very philosophical conversations about salads
