Critic: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about writing?
I’d say the best piece of advice--what basically got me writing--was to write what you know. Writing what you know is writing your truth, and when you believe in the story you’re writing, your readers will believe the story too!
I think a lot of us are worried that people will judge us if we write from our experiences, like we’re pandering to what we know. But if I’m gonna read something about dogs, for example, I’d sooner trust an author who knows dogs and/or has had them before, rather than someone who’s allergic to them and would rather have a cat lol.
