Veterans Day: KUOMagazine's Ribbons of Survivors 365 is dedicated to celebrate & honor our Military Veterans like Evangelist LaQwonna Glaster, who served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman from 2000 to 2008. She was stationed at NNMC Bethesda, Bethesda, MD (the Presidents Hospital). Her rate (job) consisted of working on a Restorative Care ward, helping patients in their restorative care. She then went on to the General Surgery Clinic, assisting doctors with minor surgery in Plastic Surgery, Sclerotherapy, General Surgery and Patient Care. She also became the assistant to the only Wound Care nurse within the area. During her time at NNMC Bethesda, she was attached to the USNS Comfort in which during 9/11 she was sent to New York with her shipmates to aide in a humanitarian mission. Following NNMC HM3 Glaster was stationed at Sewell's Point Clinic. She worked Medical Records as the Assistant Leading Petty Officer. She then went into the OB/GYN clinic assisting staff and patients with clinic procedures and pregnancies. During her time in the Navy as HM3, she endured watching patients heal and transition. She encountered many obstacles of the military as well as a physical attack that she was successful in fighting the person off. Although, she encountered many things as well as being a mom away from her son for two and a half years, she came out better than what she went in. She has come to understand that everything in her life has happened for a reason and a purpose and as she has transitioned form being a US Naval Sailor to now an Evangelist, she dealt with the wars of man but now dealing with the wars in the Spirit. God has made her a warrior for Him. So, all that she has learned in the physical, God equipped her for what she faces in the spirit. She is truly a survivor and a warrior. BROKEN BUT NOT STOLEN
Some things are just without a price. I had my middle son 15 years ago and the same Nurse Practitioner (Denise Prince-Hinton) took care of me during my pregnancy. She was absolutely amazing taking of me during that time.
Well. Shortly after I had Micaiah, I started working in OB/GYN and Mrs. Prince-Hinton was one of the nurses I worked with. She has the most amazing personality and a smile that lights up a room. She is down the earth and someone you has a huge heart.
While working with her she gave me a glass - liquid thermometer, called a Galileo Thermometer. It’s a little scientific, ask me if I ever used it.... “The answer is, NO!” For 14 years I have had that thermometer. It has been in 3 states without any complications. So, I was sweeping today, I piece of glass needed up in the broom. I thought nothing of it. Micaiah says “Mom, where did the glass come from?” I responded and said, “I don’t know.” I don’t care where the glass came from because I was just trying to clean.
As I continued to sweep under the buffet, all of this glass came from under it. Now, I’m trying to figure out what got broke but no worries, right. I swept a little deeper and as I pulled the broom towards me the balls from the thermometer showed up. When my eyes adjusted to what was before my feet, my heart sunk and all I could say was, “ohhh noooo, who broke my thermometer?” Of course I didn’t get an answer.
The thermometer meant a lot because it reminded me of someone that was special to and it was a reminder of a time I spent in the Navy that was great and it reminded me of Micaiah. How interesting that he would be the one standing there. It had a sentimental value to it, so there’s not enough money to replace it.
Since I am one who likes to repurpose things, I will repurpose the glass balls that was not damaged. I could be upset but I am not, just something in line for me to create with. One thing is for sure, the memories will always remain.
