Antoni to replace ousted Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer. The President accused McEntarfer of politicizing the job numbers report.

New Biography Examines the Legacy of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn

Mary Anne Trasciatti, Hofstra University’s director of the Labor Studies Program and professor of rhetoric, will be giving a talk about her new book, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn: The Rebel Girl, Democracy, and Revolution (Rutgers University Press) at the Lighthouse Bookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Monday, August 18.

Kim Kelly is an independent journalist, author, and organizer based in Philadelphia, PA. She has been a labor columnist for Teen Vogue since 2018, and her writing on labor, class, politics, and culture has appeared in The New Republic, the Washington Post, The New York Times, The Baffler, The Nation, The Columbia Journalism Review, and Esquire. She has also worked as a video correspondent for More Perfect Union, The Real News Network, and Means TV. Previously she was the heavy metal editor at VICE’s Noisey, and a leader in the VICE Union. She is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World’s Freelance Journalist Union, an elected councilperson for the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE).

Long Island Migrant Labor Camps: Dust for Blood with Author Mark A. Torres

Mark A. Torres reveals the riveting story of the migrant labor camps in Suffolk County from their inception during World War II, through their heyday in 1960, and culminating with their steady decline towards the end of the 20th century. Author Mark A. Torres will discuss the history of the camps, the factors that led to their decline, and the heroic efforts of critics who fought to improve the lives of migrant workers on Long Island’s East End during this period.

Presented by Hofstra Labor Studies and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program in collaboration with Long Island Jobs with Justice.
