âMhm,â Aava says. âAnd Iâm in here with you. And I donât know you that well, but you did just insinuate that the worst part of being trapped in an elevator with no food or water is the fact that Iâm in here with you, so thatâs pretty hurtful.â (Campaign modern AU, 1.8k)

âWell,â Aava says. âThis isnât ideal.â
âNot Ideal?â Leenik repeats, and, okay, itâs a little shrill. He can admit to himself that itâs a little shrill. âWeâre going to be trapped in here for the rest of our lives-â
âThey said two hours, tops.â
âWith no food, no water-â
Aava pulls a water bottle out of her terrifyingly large purse. âDo you want to keep going?â
âAnd Iâm in here with you, â Leenik says, which isnât a very nice trump card, but heâs pretty sure it is a trump card.
âMhm,â Aava says. âAnd Iâm in here with you. And I donât know you that well, but you did just insinuate that the worst part of being trapped in an elevator with no food or water is the fact that Iâm in here with you, so thatâs pretty hurtful.â
Leenik deflates a little with that. Itâs not like he knows Aava especially well, so maybe that was unwarranted on his end. A lot of what he knows about her is limited to what Tryst sort-of-sarcastically calls The Bad Month. Grizelle had died, Aava had nearly gotten custody of Tamlin because sheâs the most terrifyingly competent lawyer in the world, Trystâs dad had died, Leenik lost his hand, and Bactaâs whole thing with Sian and the private detectives and all that had started up. Itâs been a while since The Bad Month, but every time Leenik looks at Aava he feels a little nauseous anyways. Negative associations, or something.
Aava must know that he doesnât have a great answer for that - at least, one that isnât an apology, which heâs not willing to do just yet - because she sighs and takes out her phone. âThis is going to ruin my whole fucking day,â she mutters. âCourt cases donât wait for broken elevators.â
âWe could climb out,â Leenik offers. âI could give you a boost.â
She snorts. âThat sounds almost stupider than the fact that weâre trapped in a courthouse elevator. What are you doing here anyways?â
Leenik has a really great answer for that. His really great answer, which he told Tryst and Bacta and Lyn, is that heâs here to contest a parking ticket. None of them had even questioned it, which is especially great, because Leenik doesnât own a car. He kind of wonders if that means they werenât paying attention, but he guesses he should be grateful to get away with it this time.
So Leenik says âIâm here to,â and then stops. Because the words are stuck in his throat, wedged sideways.
Aavaâs eyes flick up to him from her phone, looking irritated. âYouâre here to-â
âBecause the guy who got my brother killed has a parole hearing and Iâm maybe going to go testify against a mob boss,â Leenik says, all in a rush, before clapping his hand over his mouth. âOh my god. Oh my god, why did I tell you that? Please tell me youâre not here to defend him or-â
âIâm a corporate attorney,â Aava says patiently. Leenik probably knew that at some point. The Bad Month involved a lot of intense opposition research, which was how Tryst met Lyn, or something. That whole bit is still fuzzy to Leenik. The Bad Month was bad for everyone. Including Aava. Aava, the corporate lawyer, who is impeccably dressed and looking very patiently at Leenik. âSo youâre here for the hearing?â
âI donât know.â Leenik grabs the handrail, suddenly feeling a little lightheaded. He goes to brace it with his other hand, except it turns out, what do you know, heâs still missing a hand, and his prosthetic is broken. He feels off balance, in more ways than one. âIt- Iâm going to miss it, arenât I? If Iâm in here?â
âHey,â Aava says. Sheâs a lot closer than she was a second ago, hands hovering just by Leenikâs shoulders. âDo you need to sit down?â
Leenik gulps in a breath of air and nods. Sitting sounds good. Or, well, fainting while sitting sounds better than fainting while standing.
âOkay. Iâm going to touch you now.â Aavaâs hands lands on Leenikâs shoulders, feather light. âCâmon, buddy, letâs get you on the floor.â
He lets her maneuver them until theyâre sitting, with Leenikâs head buried between his knees. He lets out a slow, deep breath. âI hate today,â he says, and it bounces around the elevator, which kind of sucks. Itâs like being surrounded by himself, which is bad enough, but itâs him and Aava and his bad mood, and thatâs kind of worse, actually.
âIâm also not a fan,â Aava says, with a little sardonic lilt to her voice. Leenik snorts out a laugh. He always kind of thought Aava was funny, which is the kind of thing youâre not supposed to think about the woman whoâs trying to take your nephew away. Heâs pretty sure heâs supposed to hate her, but she is making it really, really hard. âBreathe, Leenik.â
âOkay,â Leenik says, and then waits for his body to breathe. Itâs not doing it that great.
Aava sighs. âWith me,â she says, and takes a deep, dramatic breath. Leenik instinctively takes a deep breath, and then lets it out as Aava does. âAgain,â she says, and he follows her for a few more breaths.
His phone buzzes, and he glances at it and groans. âI think my cover story is blown.â
âCover story?â Aava repeats. âYou mean the thing about your brother wasnât real?â
âNo, thatâs the real story. But I told Bacta I was here to contest a parking ticket.â
âI didnât know you have a car.â She frowns. âWhy did I figure that out before he did?â
âBecause heâs taking care of Tamlin and his own stuff,â Leenik mutters. Heâs not about to tell Aava that it turns out that the love of Bactaâs life might not be dead, or that Bacta is going out of his mind trying to track her down. âIs it weird if I talk about Tamlin?â
âItâs only weird if you donât take care of him. Or if youâre a dick about it.â She arches an eyebrow at him. âYou planning on being a dick about it?â
âNot really.â He sighs. âIâm sorry I said that thing about it being bad Iâm stuck in an elevator with you. Itâs probably better having you here than being alone.â
âIâm glad Iâm probably better than nothing,â Aava says lightly. Leenik laughs, and one of her hands makes its way to his knee. âYou doing okay, bright eyes?â
Itâs so⊠un-Aava, so strange and genuine, that Leenik finds himself saying, âI mean, my brotherâs dead.â
âYou mentioned.â She leans her head against the elevator wall. âMy half-sisterâs dead. You knew that part, though.â
âYeah, I did.â He frowns. âI mean, I guess. I think I forgot to think of you as a person.â
Aava makes a strange noise. âExcuse me?â
âNot in a bad way.â Leenik pauses and replays what he just said. âI mean, okay, maybe a little bit in a bad way. All we knew was you were challenging us for custody of a kid you hadnât seen in years, so it was really easy to think of you as some wicked witch or something. Tryst had to keep reminding me and Bacta that you and Grizelle were sisters.â
âTryst and I are still in touch,â Aava says. Sheâs watching him. âWe hook up sometimes.â
âI know about a lot of the people Tryst hooks up with,â Leenik admits. âHeâs not great at⊠not sharing that.â
âThatâs not surprising.â
âNo, not at all. But I knew you guys are friends or whatever.â
âFriends or whatever,â Aava repeats softly. âWell, Iâm glad that he⊠you know.â
âThinks of you as a person?â Leenik doesnât smile, he doesnât think he could, but he kind of wants to. Thatâs the Tryst Valentine effect. âYeah, heâs good at that.â
âHow did your brother die?â
âItâs a long story.â
âWe have a couple hours.â
âI donât know you that well,â Leenik says, because he might as well make sure all of his cards are on the table before he launches into the story the way he wants to. âAnd I feel a little weird about doing this a few months after everything went down, and you canât tell Bacta or Tryst because they donât know.â
âThey donât know your brother died?â
âThey donât know I had a brother.â
Aava makes a soft noise, which Leenik canât identify as sympathy or surprise or anything, really, because his heart is racing again and thatâs just about all he can focus on. âBut you need to talk about it.â
âI kind of think I do.â Leenik fumbles with his phone in one hand. Bactaâs text is still there, and heâs going to have to deal with that. And heâs definitely going to miss the hearing, and Aavaâs going to miss- whatâs Aava going to miss? âYouâre late for work, arenât you?â
âYes, I am.â
âThat sucks.â
âIt does. Are you deflecting?â
âNo,â Leenik says, and turns to study her face. Her eyes are closed, but she cracks one open to look at him. She looks peaceful, with her knees tucked up to her chest and elbows resting on top of them. Sheâs wearing a suit, and a nice one at that, but she looks totally unbothered about sitting on the floor of an elevator. And she looks like sheâs listening to Leenik. Itâs kind of nice, actually. âIâm just trying to make sure Iâm thinking of you as a person this time.â
Aava lets out a little hmph of laughter and closes her open eye. âI appreciate that,â she says, and itâs all sardonic and cool, but he can hear something real underneath it. Like she actually appreciates it.
âAre you sure you want to hear this?â Leenik asks, just to be sure.
âWhat else am I supposed to listen to?â
âWe could play music or something.â
âI need my phone to be ready for incoming calls or anything.â
âBecause of lawyer emergencies?â
âBecause it makes me anxious to be caught off guard in a situation like this. Iâd prefer to talk.â
Leenik drums his fingers on the floor beside him. âThank you.â
âOf course,â Aava says, like itâs nothing. And Leenik loves Tryst and Bacta, he really does, but theyâre not⊠listeners. Not the way that Aava is listening to him right now. It feels kind of nice. Heâs going to have to keep this in mind.
Leenik takes a deep breath and nods to himself. Theyâre going to be in this elevator for a while, but itâs a long story. He needs to get started. âLet me tell you about Venton,â he says, and for the first time in years, it feels a little less like something is squeezing his chest. It feels like he can breathe a little easier.
