Echoes - Part 9

âThis wonât be forever, though. Just take it one day at a time and youâll be back in flight before you know it.â
Elliot smiled at him with his eyes (if that was even possible. He had been told for several times that sometimes his smile showed in his eyes rather than his lips). He waited until Taz settled down before he spoke again.
"Thatâs not my only concern. I do know weâre short of men for recon missions. and now⌠we have another one out, I guess."
He sighed. What Taz said about the traitor being among them had got into his mind. He was new around there, there was no way he would know who that would be. Ironically, the fact that he was new in the band would make him a suspect as wellâŚ
"Well, at least I guess I can at least stick around in the base and help with terrain data. I had a short run before, but it was a good one. AlthoughâŚ" he attempted to set himself in sitting position, which wasnât exactly an easy task with his leg hanging on a thread connected to the ceiling like a dead chicken. The lad groaned with the effort, adjusting his pillows to support his bandaged torso. "âŚI honestly donât think their intel is very good. I understand why they would target you, youâre one of the big cheeses around here. Wolf too. Archer, Widow, Toad, Cowboy. You name it. Me? I just got here."
He closed his eyes for a couple of moments, still slightly feverish, most of the parts of his body still pulsing with pain that was subduing the anesthesia effect. He opened his eyes again, looking directly at Tazâs eyes.
"Taz, I think itâs you they were trying to get. You and someone else that wasnât supposed to be me. Who was I replacing?"
Taz watched the kid close his eyes for a moment, and a flash of reality came to him. He would need to let him rest; worrying the kid with problems he couldn't help with in his current condition was not good. He bit his bottom lip and made a mental note to choose his next words carefully. Stressing his wounded partner was the last thing he should be doing right now.
He sighed softly as he sat back in the solitary chair against the far wall. "Ali. She was the one who was supposed to come with me. That is, before she twisted her ankle when we went for a run on one of the trails in the woods." Taz shook his head and pinched the bridge of his nose. With a deep exhalation, he looked back over to Kurtz. "If you're right about this, she was the one they were trying to bring down, too. But I dunno, man. It doesn't matter that you're new--you're still part of the 141. You were most likely a target. And I don't think the traitor failed, not exactly," Taz gestured to the lieutenant's immobile figure. "They got us good. Took down our parkour athlete." He shook his head, his blue eyes going blank as his thoughts wandered. The faces of each individual on the base flashed through his mind. He couldn't pinpoint one person in particular who would without a doubt be the traitor. Of course, he wouldn't expect the bastard to make him or herself easily recognizable.
His fists clenched subconsciously on either arm of the chair, his Adams apple bobbing as he remained silent with his inner turmoil. The thought of Aliana being taken down brought forth an anger he couldn't quite explain. He wished with all his might that Kurtz had not taken the blow, but he could only imagine how different it might have been if Ali had been the victim. With her slight frame and no telling where she might have been during the initial explosion, she could have been killed in an instant. Her small body would probably not have been able to withstand the shock of the injuries which Kurtz now endured. Taz snapped out of his thoughts and fixed his intense blue gaze on the lieutenant once more. "I'm so sorry this had to happen to you, Elliot. Whether or not you were the other target, you still took the brunt of it, and I'll find out who was behind this. It's the least I could do to make it up to you. Besides," he added, a flash of a smile brushing his lips. "You're a damn good partner to have and I'd rather have you out there with me than studying terrain."
