Something that wonât happen in Bloodline but it would be cool if it did
The alarms wailed loudly as Nero led Laura to the data center.Â
âDoctor, where are we going? We have to get off the island,â Laura said, out of breath as she struggled to keep up with Nero.
Nero shook his head as he opened the door and led her inside. âNo, Miss Brand.â
Laura didnât think sheâd ever seen him hesitate to speak before. Now, his composure wavered for just a moment before he continued.Â
âI have to stay here. You are the one that needs to get off the island.â
âWhat? Doctor, thereâs-â
âStop. Donât ask questions. We donât have much time.â
Nero strode over to the large column in the middle of the room and started typing commands. Blue lights around the room began to glow softly as something began to boot up. Laura hadnât seen a label for this room on the maps before, so she didnât know what it was.Â
Nero finished typing and turned to face her. âLaura. I need to talk to you.â
âUm, yes sir.â
âYou never wanted to be here for your first three years as an Alpha, but you chose to stay. Why?â
Laura paused for a moment. There were so many reasons.Â
âI always thought of this place as terrible. After⊠after the Glasshouse, I know what âterribleâ really means, and this isnât it.â
Nero nodded. âYouâve changed, in your time here. Youâve learned about the world. When I first met with your parents, I knew you were a child who was raised in a home where you were loved. You didnât see ugliness.â
âBut thereâs ugliness in the world, even if I didnât see it.â
âItâs everywhere. In the disorganized, misguided, and evil governments, in the way problems go forgotten or ignored for years at a time. Left alone, the world is controlled by people with the wrong priorities, who donât know what they are doing.â
Nero looked at Laura, waiting for her to respond. âThat is the role of the supervillain. To see the world the way it is, and take control.â It was something theyâd talked about in class for years, but sheâd finally started to take it to heart.
âAnd what of Anastasia Furan?â
âSheâsâŠâ Laura looked for the phrase. âSheâs not a supervillain. Sheâs a monster. She doesnât limit herself, or take care of the repercussions of what she does. She only takes. Sheâs a black hole.â
Nero pulled a chair close to her and sat in it, so that he could look at her in the eye. His suit had been scratched and torn, and he had blood and soot smudged all over him, but he held himself the same way. âKnowing this, what is the role of GLOVE?â
After years of study at the HIVE, something finally clicked into place.
âTo press back against the oblivion. The people in charge out there donât know what theyâre doing, and we want to rule in their stead, but there are truly evil people who threaten the very existence of the world. A supervillain canât rule over ashes. If weâre going to take over the world, we have to protect it.â
Nero put his hands on her shoulders. âThose are all of the right answers.â
The alarms continued to blare in the background. The island was going, and soon.
Laura was very afraid, but she didnât shake, and she didnât break eye contact.
âLaura, you have learned so much. You came from an innocent family, but youâve seen the worst of what the world has to offer. Youâve done terrible things. Once, you were manipulated into doing those terrible things, and now you know better.âÂ
He took a breath, and continued. âI remember when you shot young Malpense to save us from Overlord. I know it was hard, but I also know now that youâre a person capable of making those difficult decisions. Youâre capable of great love and care, but youâre also capable of knowing when to cut your losses, and letting go.â
âDoctor Nero, what is this?â Laura asked, a knotting feeling growing in her gut.
âIâm not making it off the island,â he said simply. âI donât know if I made the right decisions, in my time here. The HIVE was something I cared about very much, but I donât know if I was right to rebuild it in the first place. That decision, and many others, is in your hands now.â
âWhat?â Laura shook her head slowly, but stopped, beginning to understand.
Nero stood up and walked back to the column in the middle of the room. He placed his hand on a palm reader and began to speak. âHIVEmind?â
âYes, Doctor Nero.â
âI need to transfer all of my credentials to Laura Brand.â
There was a pause. âAll of them, sir?â
âYes, HIVEmind. All of them. Do it quickly.â
Long seconds passed. The blue lights that illuminated the room turned a forest green, and Nero pulled a large device out of the center column.Â
He handed it to Laura. It was like a Blackbox, but much bigger.
âFiles. On everything there is to know. Donât share them.â
Laura looked up at him, gulping.Â
âAre you sure, sir?â
âAbsolutely. Now get out of here. Donât look for anyone. Iâll stay behind and make sure everyone makes it out. Take care of that box.â
Laura only nodded. She didnât have the voice for words.
She turned and walked out of the data center, the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Nero watched her leave.Â
âGodspeed, Number One.âÂ
