A song from March: Trad.Attack! - “Säde / Spark”

“Säde / Spark” is the first single from Trad.Attack!’s second full length album Kullakarva (Shimmer Gold) which is to be released on 19th May. Trad.Attack! is known for approaching the traditional folk music with excitement, blending it with the technology and sensibilities of the 21st century while staying true to the tradition itself. In that sense, Trad.Attack! carries on the tradition of folk music. For them it’s not something fixed in a cast, but it’s something alive, something which is still developing and therefore open to change and interpretation. The band’s musical influence therefore springs from the past (the roots), but is always oriented towards the future as there is a beautiful interplay between the ‘has been’ and ‘what could be’.
The band has stated that the key concept for compiling Kullakarva has been “time”. Meaning they have had time to work with it, to figure things out and to let the music carry them. This is a beautiful concept for both songwriting and for interpersonal relationships; and it shines through on “Säde / Spark”. The track is toned down, it’s not as energetic as we’d come to expect from Trad.Attack!, but its meditative quality is intoxicating in its own right. The song develops gradually, it takes its time; the growth is both marked by the development of the melodic devices (flute and bells) and by the acoustic guitars transition from playing arpeggios to strumming. The addition of drums at the end of the song ties it all together rather nicely, giving the song a sense of finality.
