This particular A319 is one of the 34 A319s that were delivered to America West 1998-2005 before its merger with US Airways. America West became an Airbus operator in 1990 with the delivery of five A320s on 28 September 1990 that were originally ordered by Braniff II. At the time of the US Airways merger in 2005, America West had 34 A319s and 66 A320s. Ever since Southwest’s founding in 1971, San Antonio has always been an important city for the airline as being part of the original “Texas Triangle” of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. From April 2017 to March 2018, Southwest held a 42% market share in passenger traffic at SAT- the next biggest market shares in order at SAT are American (19%), Delta (12%), United (10%) and Frontier (4%). The top domestic destinations from SAT in order from most popular are DFW, ATL, DAL, IAH, PHX, DEN, LAS, LAX, ORD, and HOU. Even though traffic to DFW, ATL, and IAH declined from 2016, traffic to Dallas Love Field increased. N932AM, one of American Airlines’ A321s, makes a dusk arrival at San Antonio International Airport. This aircraft was delivered brand new to American just in March this year having been assembled at Airbus’s Mobile, Alabama final assembly line. Just last week American announced they were going to retrofit 92% of their 219-strong fleet of Airbus A321s with larger overhead bins called “Airspace XL” which provide about 40% more space than the current overhead bins in a recognition that more passengers are traveling with carry-on bags than before. The new bins are produced by Airbus and American Airlines is the launch customer for this cabin refit program carried out by Airbus’s newest subsidiary, Services by Airbus. Services by Airbus was created in 2016 to tap into the global commercial aviation post-production service market which is projected to be worth over $3.2 trillion over the next 20 years. Cabin and system upgrades on existing aircraft are seen as a future revenue opportunity with approximately 15-20% of that $3.2 trillion in the North American market alone. This aircraft was originally delivered to America West on 31 October 2000 as a GECAS lease, transferred to US Airways in 2005 with the merger of US Airways and America West and then transferred again to American with the next merger in 2013. A Pilatus PC-12 (N500NK) taxis in at sunset at San Antonio International Airport. This PC-12 has been retrofitted with a Hartzell five-blade swept blade composite propeller. Compared to the standard four-blade aluminum prop, the five bladed prop allows the PC-12 to cruise 5 knots faster, it can reach 28,000 feet 10% faster and offers a 50-foot reduction in takeoff distance. The swept airfoils also reduce cabin noise. As a bonus, the composite prop is also about seven pounds lighter than the four-blade aluminum propeller. I looked up the list price for the Hartzell prop and their own press releases quoted a price of around $83,600 but trading in the original four blade prop got you a $15,000 discount. The five bladed prop is standard on the latest PC-12NG variant. Swept blade props date back to the 1940s with German scientists testing wind tunnel models of such props. NACA (NASA’s predecessor) did extensive research on swept blade propellers as part of its high speed propeller research program but found that the aerodynamics and loads were complex- the technology limitations of the day meant that thinner straight blades were an easier answer.
