Her ancestors – on Father's side, anyway – had once used hounds to hunt the foxes of the Serennian countryside.

Contessa sometimes liked to compare her dearest Sorrisetto to those antiquities, when a whimsical enough mood struck her. He was superior in every regard, of course, but it could not be denied that sometimes the purposes coincided. Lucretia stroked the fur on the back of the Shistavaren's neck idly, waiting for their quarry to enter her chosen grounds. She normally preferred to leave the details of little affairs like this to her apprentice, but in this case the specimens in question had been interesting enough to warrant her coming all the way to Nar Shaddaa. The smells of the place was truly atrocious, she decided as she covered her nose with a silken handkerchief, and she was almost regretful that it wasn't the first time she'd sent Fidele to acquire individuals for her on the premises. Still, sacrifices would have to be made for the cause.

Lucretia was getting at an age where she could safely say she was nearing the second half of her lifespan, and to have only that little time left was simply unacceptable. There were still so many things to see done, so many experiments to be hand and mysteries to unravel. No, it was clear that her own mortality had become another issue she needed to dissect. The specimens they were here to pick up should open up the field of study quite nicely: pure-blooded Sephi twins, supposedly without any narcotics habits. The pointy-eared species was extremely long-lived, and identical twins would make a good control sample to begin further experiments. It was rare to find pureblood like them so far away from their home system: even the slave trade had failed to produce any worthy subjects when she'd made inquiries.

“Mistress,” Sorrisetto growled. “I can smell them.”

Lucretia removed her fingers from her apprentice's fur with a gentle pat.

“Go,” she told him. “And do take care not to damage them overmuch, my darling.”

The Shistavaren shot off like an arrow into the dark, eerily silent for a creature his size. Such a good boy he was, her Fidele. Though he was a lacklustre assistant when it came to scientific endeavours and he was still a little too rugged for high society, Eeth possessed the quality she prized the most in spades: loyalty. Even among the Cult, who were more of a family that her own blood ever had been, such unerring faithfulness was a rarity. Many of her brethren spent their time squabbling over status and resources, the Triumvirate not least among them, but her Sorrisetto was better than that. He knew his place and purpose and was at peace with them, as she was. He'd had that virtue to him since the first time she'd met him, and it was one of things she most admired about her apprentice.

画像がいっぱい、きれいな色使いのデザインで、まだ字の読めないお子さんでも楽しんでもらえると思います。 「みいつけた！」鑑賞のお供に、ぜひとも一家に一冊。
