Korean words that are commonly confused (part 3)

아빠 - dad

오빠 - older brother

Example Sentences:

I look like my mom a lot, but my younger brother looks just like my dad.

켜다 - (turn) on

끄다 - (turn) off

Example Sentences:

집에 들어오자마자 텔레비전을 켜고 드라마를 봤어.

As soon as I get home, I turn on the tv and watch dramas.

🌚끄다

그는 방을 나오면서 불을 끄지 않았어.

He didn't turn out the light when he went out of the room.

간장 - soy sauce

긴장 - nervousness, tension

Example Sentences:

The soup was salty because I put too much soy sauce in it.

전 긴장을 하면 손이 떨려요.

My hands shake when I'm nervous.

불 - fire; light

뿔 - horn (animal)

Seung-gyu turned off the light and lied down, but he couldn't sleep.

Horned animals protect themselves with their horns.

바람 - wind

발음 - pronunciation

🗣발음

두 단어는 철자는 다르지만 발음은 같아요.

The two words are spelled differently but pronounced the same.

대답하다 - to answer

답답하다 - frustrated

Example Sentences:

학생은 선생님의 질문에 정확하게 대답했습니다.

The student answered the teacher's question correctly.

😩답답하다

답답할 때는 언제든지 찾아와.

Come and see me whenever you feel frustrated.

AUDIO:

I don't know exactly what you mean by that exactly, but I'm assuming you mean social media that is used in Korea / is mostly or all in Korean - forcing you to read, listen, and use to it all the time.

Technically, any social media can become that. You would have to follow a lot of Korean speakers/Korean learners and maybe even change the language to Korean on that specific social media platform or even your phone language - but you don't have to do that.

Korean Youtube Channel

A good Idea you could do is to make a new account for youtube and subscribe to only Korean speakers and It can become your Korean account. Not just korean teachers, but any things that you usually like to watch. For example, vloggers, gamers, cooking videos, fitness influencers, people who do fashion content, kids educational content, etc. But a less extreme version would be just subscribing to a good amount of Korean youtubers on your regular account.

Social Media Koreans Use

I'm sorry that I don't actually know a ton of specifically Korean sns, but I looked up a few

TWITCH & V-LIVE App

V-live is a live-streaming app where you can watch livestreams of your favorite Kpop groups. Usually they speak only in Korean, but I'm pretty sure there are subtitles added on to past streams anyways. You can practice listening and reading.

Twitch is a live-streaming platform as well, that doesn't only have Koreans but these days Korean gamers are very popular. You can find a person that you like to watch and practice your listening skills.

NAVER (blogs, webtoons..) Apps

Basically anything naver. But Naver is kind of like the "Google" of Korea. You can find a ton of blogs in Korean over there about a wide variety of topics. Naver webtoons is a good place to find cool webtoons to practice reading and you can learn lots of vocab, phrases, and slang.

HILOKAL App

This is different from the social media mentioned above, but there are native Koreans ans Korean teachers here. Basically, there are chatrooms that you can go into and practice speaking with native Koreans and other learners. You can also do that for other languages.

LANGUAGE EXCHANGE APPS

There are some good language exchange apps out there that you can use to practice speaking and texting with native speakers. Some will work better for some people than others.

How To Make Commands & Requests Using: (으)세요, 아/어 주다, & -지 마세요

V + (으)세요 = Please (verb)

usage:

- to politely request, suggest something, or make a command

- can also be used to end a question to make the question more polite. (Requesting info)

- Ex: 영어 하세요? = can you speak English?

Ends in consonant - 으세요

Ends in vowel - 세요

- 세요 is a shortened version of -셔요, which comes from the suffix -시. -시 is used to make verbs and adjectives more polite

- (으)십시요 is the same thing as -(으)세요, but is a very formal way of giving commands.

Examples:

거기 앉으세요 - Please sit there.

내일 시험이 있으니 열심히 공부하세요.

Since there is a test tomorrow, please study hard.

물 더 주세요 - Please give me more water

아/어 주다 - Give; To do something for someone

usage:

- 주다 on it’s own means “to give”

- By adding ~아/어 주다 to the stem of a word, you can imply that the action is somehow beneficial to you (or whoever the action is being done for)

- It’s almost as if you’re telling someone to do you a “favor” and do it for you

- Conjugate the first verb before adding 주다

- Usually (으)세요 is added to make your request more polite

> 아/어 주세요 = Please do for me

Examples:

창문을 열어 주세요.

Please open the window. (For me)

선생님은 저에게 설명해 줬어요.

The teacher explained it to me.

아/어 주다 + negative situations

usage:

- 지 말다 is used when telling somebody *not* to do somthing.

- you can put ~아/어 주다 and ~지 말다 together to create the meaning of “please don’t do it for me”

- V -지 말아 주다 (지 말아 주세요)

Examples:

수업 시간 동안 자지 말아 주세요.

Please don’t sleep in my class.

저를 쳐다보지 말아 주세요.

Please don’t stare at me.

-지 마세요 - Don’t do it

usage:

- this is a form of 지 말다, except it’s a different meaning than we just learned

- 지 마 means you are commanding someone not to do something (not for you, but just in general)

- 지 마 + 세요 = polite command

Examples:

가지 마세요 - Please don’t go

너무 빨리 먹지 마세요 - Don’t eat your food too fast

슬퍼하지 마세요 - Please don’t be sad

이미 vs 벌써

already vs already?

Both have same meaning of 'Already', and can actually be used interchangeably in some situations. But 벌써 has another meaning to it that sets it apart from 이미.

The important thing is that 벌써 includes a sense of surprise while 이미 is more flat and factual.

이미 only applies to something that has already happened (이미 늦었어요).

벌써 - so soon; long ago | can be used for things happening sooner than you thought or faster than you expected.

Ex: 벌써 세 시야! (It's already 3 o'clock!) is natural, but 이미 세 시야! sounds weird.

Because of this, 벌써 tends to be used more widely than 이미, especially in daily conversation.

이미 Examples:

이미 다 알고 있으니 거짓말하지.

I already know, so don't lie!

나는 이미 그 사실을 알고 있었다

I already knew that.

내가 정거장에 도착했을 때 기차는 이미 떠나 버렸어요

When I arrived at the station, the train had already started[left].

벌써 Examples:

너와 내가 만난 지 벌써 십 년이 넘었다.

It's already been more than a decade since you and I met.

지수는 약속 장소에 벌써 와서 나를 기다리고 있었어.

Jisoo was already at the appointment/promised place (the place we promised to meet) and waiting for me.

난 벌써 돈을 다 써 버렸어.

I’ve spent all my money already.

~ 어느새 - already, so soon

~ 어느덧 - already, so soon

~ 아까 - a while ago

~ 조금 전 - a little while ago

~ 조금 전까지 - until just a few minutes ago

~ 방금 - a moment ago; just now
