When I last found myself in the small town of Königslutter in Germany, my girlfriend led me down to this really beautiful area hidden away beneath the treeline, with a waterfall which began level with the base of the town's Cathedral (or 'Kaiserdom' in German). It trickles down over the rocks into a small splashpool, runs along a manmade stream between moss-covered blocks, and then splashes more abruptly into a wider lake. You can stand at the end of the stream and turn 180 degrees to cast your eyes from the start of the first waterfall down to the destination of the second. It's especially gorgeous in autumn when the orange, brown, and yellowing leaves are carried along on the water, and surround the stream in big piles over the muddy banks. To walk from a place as quiet, isolated, and natural as this straight back into bustling civilisation is quite surreal.
