Barend Cornelis Koekkoek - “Summer Wooded Landscape with a Castle” [1851]

Hermanus Willem Koekkoek (Amsterdam, January 7, 1867 - there, 9 September 1929) was a Dutch painter, best known for his military scenes. He was part of the well-known Koekkoek painting dynasty and was the son of city painter Willem Koekkoek and brother Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek. Hermanus Willem Koekkoek was trained by his father, Willem Koekkoek. He lived and worked initially in Amsterdam, lived from 1887 to 1891 in London, where his uncles Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger and Hendrik Barend Koekkoek sat in the gallery, then went back to Amsterdam and moved back to London in 1901. Early 1920s he returned to his hometown, where he died in 1929, aged 62 years. Hermanus Willem Koekkoek made his name as a painter of military scenes. He was one of the few Dutch painters who practiced this genre. Many of his works have military operations in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) as a subject for which he carried out meticulous historical research. Preferably painted cavalry charges, but also the daily life of soldiers had his attention. Several of his works are on display at the Army Museum in Delft. Koekkoek made alongside military scenes and portraits, genre works, historical scenes and animal representations.

Johannes Koekkoek (8 December 1811 in Middelburg, April 1831 in Breda) was a Dutch landscape and marine painter of "calm and troubled waters" as well as Lithograph. Johannes came from the Dutch painter family Koekkoek, which gave lasting impulses to the Dutch painting of the Romantic period. He was the third son of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek and Anna van Koolwijk. His brothers were Barend Cornelis, Marinus Adrianus and Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder, his sister was Anna Koekkoek (* 1812). In the father's studio, Johannes Koekkoek and his brothers received the first painting lessons. From 1826 until his death in 1831, he worked as a painter. In 1930 he worked in Amsterdam. He died at the age of 19 in Breda.

Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek (July 6, 1840, Amsterdam - January 24, 1912, Hilversum) was a Dutch artist. He was the son of artist Hermanus Koekkoek, brother of Willem Koekkoek, and nephew of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. His grandfather was the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek. Koekkoek started painting in the romantic tradition of his father but after 1864 he changed his style to a kind of realism, under influence of the Hague School.
