Despite what some of you dear readers think, I don't eat (and drink) out every single night.  Far from it - many an evening features nothing more hedonistic than some good home-cooked food and a few re-runs of the Antiques Roadshow.   I'm lucky that the other Mr Highlifeandlowlife is a tireless maestro in the kitchen so I don't usually have to do more than uncork the wine and load the dishwasher but sometimes I'm left home alone for a few days (I know - it's an outrage!) and I'm far too lazy to actually cook for myself.   It's then I find myself nipping two minutes round the corner to our fantastic local Kødbyens Deli.

Although the name is a little misleading (deli makes me think of jars of olives, nice bread and perhaps a sandwich or two), this place is really a stylish little take-away that specialises in just a handful of really good dishes.  The staff are friendly and helpful and cook everything to order.  I nearly always alternate between the deli burger (with extra bacon and cheese of course) and fish and chips - the latter being as far away as you can imagine from the greasy over-battered cod that you seem to get in too many chip-shops in England these days (I have such fond memories of amazing fish and chips as a child but it does seem to be a dying art).  The chips are big and chunky (like me if I keep on going as often as I have been...) and there's tartar sauce or chilli mayonnaise to dip them in.  They always offer a daily special and a small selection of puddings and there's a fridge full of wine and beer to help wash it all down .  Everything is beautifully presented (the burger comes in gingham printed paper for a bit of Dolly-Parton-has-a-picnic chic) and, in a city where it seems even churches are reluctant to open on a Sunday, the place is open seven days a week.  Sometimes, just sometimes, I can cope with a night in...

Somewhere bright to sit and wait...

You still need some alcohol of course...

Just because it's a take-away doesn't mean you should lower your standards!

Deli burger for one.  You can keep your McDonalds thank you very much.
