Reef Knot (or Square Knot) ;;Â used for tying together ropes of a similar thickness.
Figure-of-Eight Knot ;;Â stops a rope from running through an eye or block
Bowline Knot ;;Â used to make a temporary loop/eye in a rope, esp. when used as a lifeline
Clove Hitch ;;Â used to secure rope to spar or rail (tightens if pulled from other side)
Timber Hitch ;;Â used to secure end of rope to a spar or cargo (i.e. sack). Can be used in conjunction with half-hitch.
Rolling Hitch ;;Â used to secure rope to spar when pull is from either side
Round Turn and Two Half Hitches ;;Â used to secure heavy loads to ring or shackle. Can also be released quickly.
Fishermen's Bend ;; Â Alternative to round turn and two half hitches. Often used to secure rope/hawser to ring of anchor. Is not easily undone. Tighter if pulled.
Sheet Bend ;;Â used to secure end of rope to small ring or eye. The more secure/complex version of this knot is the double sheet bend.
Hawser Bend ;;Â used to join two steel/rope hawsers to become similar to two linked bowlines. Ends of ropes are usually seized/tied to standing part of rope.
