Knitting Tips &a Tricks: "One Size Fits All" is a lie. Remember when you are knitting toques, beanies, bun beanies, or headbands that women, men, children, toddlers, and babies all have different head circumference's. The numbers that you need to figure out sizing for your projects are usually listed on knitting patterns but can also be found online if you just google the size you are looking for. The other thing that effects the sizing of anything you are knitting is the wool/Yarn you are working with-- thickness of wool/Yarn and the stretchyness of the wool/Yarn might add to your sizing or take away from your sizing; so take these things into consideration when knitting. . . . I'm usually knitting women's headbands, beanies, bun beanies or toques. The most common circumference of a woman's head is 21 inches. *This is an average, not a rule, if you know someone's you are knitting for wears a Large in hat sizes, you might want to measure their head to make sure that your knitting project will fit them. My own head is on the small size so 21" is spot on with some loose bagginess that I like, so my toques/beanies slouch (perfect for a bad hair day 💁🏻💕). Step 8. How to Cast Off aka Bind Off. Once you have finished your project it is time to Cast Off or Bind Off so you can be fully finished your piece or ready to stitch a seam etc. There are many ways to Cast Off/Bind Off however this technique is probably the easiest. Start the row as you would any other by knitting the first stitch onto the other knitting needle, then knit the second stitch. Once you have two stitches on your needle, lift the first stitch over the second so you only have one stitch remaining on your needle. Continue to do this for as many stitches you have on your needle; whether that be 5 or 100. Once you reach the last stitch/loop cut the end of the yarn/wool you are working with from the ball and loop through the last stitch and pull it tight. You may also want to loop it through again and tie to ensure that it is 100% secure. Now you have successfully Cast Off/Binded Off! Congratulations!! You now know how to finish your project!! Step 5. Starting your Knitting Project! Every Knitting Project begins with a simple step called "Casting On." Now there are many different ways to cast on (if you do some research you will see all these different styles), however I am going to demonstrate the easiest of these techniques. First you will need to make a sliding knot with the end of your yarn/wool, making sure to leave a long piece at the end of the knot for finishing steps after you've completed your project. Once you have made this knot, slide the loop around one of the knitting needles that you will be using for your project and tighten the loop around the needle until it only has a tiny bit of slack (just enough to feed the other knitting needle through without difficulty). Once your loop is the appropriate size, slide the loop almost to the end of the needle, feed the opposite knitting needle through the back of the loop and draw the yarn/wool over the back of the loop and feed through creating a new loop. This new loop is then feed over the same knitting needle your starting loop is on, and if you see in this video clip, now you should have two loops on the same needle. Continue to make as many "loops" otherwise known as "Stitches" as needed for your pattern. Remember that in knitting that you are always starting with the left knitting needle (which is what you are casting onto), and feeding onto the right (with the exception of the casting on process). I myself am making some mittens, so I'll be casting on 42 stitches as the pattern requires. Now you've officially started your project!!! Step 4. The last thing I do before starting a project, after picking what I want to make, making sure I have the right tools and then procuring Yarn/Wool; is rolling all my yarn/wool for the project into balls. When I was learning how to knit, my instructor told myself and my classmates that the reason for rolling yarn/wool into balls before starting is to make sure that the yarn doesn't have any knots in it or that it isn't tangled. Now this is my personal least favourite step before starting a project and when I was learning how to knit I often tried skipping this step only to have yarn/wool knot on me and tangle etc. Since those rather frustrating moments I have learned that my instructor was correct- it is best to start off a project having the wool/yarn rolled nicely. However this step does require a lot of patience and time, so don't rush, roll away slowly and patiently. I personally try to buy wool/yarn in bulk and then mass roll all my purchases so when I do start a project I don't even have to worry about this step! This makes my life easier and less frustrating in the long run. As you hopefully can see in this video, I start rolling every ball of yarn/wool with two fingers to get a few loops going and then I tightly wind the yarn/wool over itself until it forms a small ball. Once that first small ball is started, the rest gets easier and easier as you go. After all your yarn/wool has been rolled into balls, you are finally ready to start your project!
