when you do a longtail-type cast-on and you end up with a tail that's not too short or too long
cabling without a cable needle (fuck cable needles)
casting on with the old norwegian cast-on and doing that little twist thing
changing to the body needles from the ribbing and knitting the stitches from the smaller needle to the larger one
using a 12" cable needle (i don't have many bc i magic loop a lot so i don't have to get more than one length per needle size. but it's so nice to just keep going. also WAY easier for colorwork if you're doing that which i'm not atm)
