The king ran to embrace him;
more than a hundred times
he hugs and kisses him.
As soon as he got a chance
he gave him back all of his land;
he gave him more than I’m telling you.
“Bisclavret” by Marie de France, 12th C.

Do you ever just start an illustration meant for Valentine’s Day and then not finish it until July? The good news is I’ll be offering full size prints and 5x7 greeting cards (with matching envelope!) of this illustration at all future events! Perfect for those who want to be extremely prepared for next February. Or for declaring what’s in your heart to your lady love any time of year. Handlettering blackletter text on a curved baseline was a big challenge for this piece. The flowers in each corner are, of course, bleeding hearts. The original inspiration was Victorian Valentine’s Day cards, but it took a very different turn as it progressed.
Portrait of the Vampire Lestat, 16th C. 🩸
I’m so delighted to finally share my full piece for Blood & Brocade, an Interview with the Vampire zine inspired by historical fashion! Preorders are now closed, but you can still get a digital copy on the @thevelvetcompote‘s website!
The concept is Lestat’s chartreuse rockstar outfit from the S3 trailer but make it 1500-1550! Featuring my horrifying realization that Lestat would absolutely love a codpiece. The pose and some details are based on Leyendecker’s Arrow Collar Man Reading A Book, which also inspired the robe Lestat wears in S1E1 ‘In Throes of Increasing Wonder’. The book is Paradise Lost. This piece doesn’t fit into the canon timeline but I had a lot of fun imagining what Lestat might have worn in this historical period.
My latest Sir Gawain and the Green Knight illustration, book cover addition! Also, I am currently available for book cover commissions.
