British Army Knapsacks of the 18th Century:

"Square knapsacks are most convenient, for packing up the Soldier's necessaries, and should be made with a division, to hold the shoes, black-ball and brushes, separate from the linen: a certain size must be determined on for the whole, and it will have a pleasing effect upon a March, if care has been taken, to get them of all white goat-skins, with leather-stings welt whitened, to hang over each shoulder; which method makes the carriage of the Knapsack much easier, than across the breast, and by no means so heating." - Bennet Cuthbertson, System, for the complete interior management and œconomy of a battalion of infantry, (Bristol: Rouths and Nelson, 1776) Ch. XII, Art. XLII

Of the images I've gathered, none predating the 1790's depict painted canvas knapsacks in use. However, evidence as early as 1779 suggests that British regiments were acquiring the painted canvas type. The goatskin knapsack had a long life- Some regiments were still using the article into the 19th century- Charles James observed in A Military Dictionary (London, 1802): "White goat-skins are sometimes used, but we do not conceive them to be equal to the painted canvas ones." Cuthbertson would certainly beg to differ!

When the school year starts, you are uncertain as to how many books and supplies your son or daughter will have to cart around every day.

I’d definitely recommend something with a lot of room. I wouldn’t go for any of the forever 21 little knapsacks cause my laptop wouldn’t fit, and I use my laptop for a lot of courses. You’ll also want to account for water bottles as well as food space. Are you comfortable with water bottles in the same place as your notes? Or your lunch?

Personally, around York, I’ve seen a lot of ladies carrying purses, but I personally can’t. I have a backpack that’s not too big. It’s from that Swiss company and got one big compartment and a few small ones (and it’s purple! :D). I’d say go for any Swiss ones since those served me for a while… Roots is also good I heard. If you don’t need a laptop, a trendy canvas one from forever 21 I think would be good. One of my friends fits her Macbook Air into a canvas style one :)

If you’re not going to be carrying a laptop then a Jansport works just as well, I’ve been using my Jansport for years now and it hasn’t let me down once. :)
