yona's playlist for kino on their third month of being together.
The album of the month is Patchwork produced by Alohaii, featuring vocals from a whole host of vtubers (and a few utaite): Miori Celesta, Kiyon, Wisteria Iroha, Rachie, Vally.exe, Limealicious, Shiki Miyoshino, Vie, and Kirispica.
This is Alohaii's fourth album, and while I've enjoyed his works in the past, it has been somewhat surprising to find myself returning to Patchwork with such regularity. Though it's best enjoyed in its entirety, especially given the care taken over the overarching story and cohesion between tracks, every song can stand strongly alone both muscially and lyrically. As touched on by Alohaii himself in an interview with Vtuber NewsDrop, I can definitely see (hear!) the step forward taken with this album.
Whilst the electro-pop roots are still prominent, the influences from Shibayan Records' bossa nova shine through, adding a lovely fresh twist. The bass work by Tikaal is second to none, and easily one of the work's muscial highlights. Another of those highlights is of course the strong vocals, which are consistently passionate and emotional. Lyrically, the album wears themes of abuse and the ensuing poor mental health on its sleeve. On occasion it can be a little too blunt for my taste, but more often than not it results in a heart-rending performance.
Despite the heavy themes, the album is quite easy to listen to casually thanks to the electro-pop / bossa nova styling, although I would recommend sitting down with it at least once to focus on the lyrics. Personal stand outs from the track list are: Pearl featuring Shiki Miyoshino, which has an impressively tender performance, where oppressive bass mirrors the oppressive emotions on display; and Never Knew Love Could Hurt So Bad featuring Rachie, who's incredibly sorrowful singing is complemented with a wistful saxophone, just to drive the point home.
I recorded a VCV for kiyon. at this point I'm not planning on releasing the voicebank as the rec quality isn't that great (a lot of filters were applied to get his voice to be clear). I need a new mic u_u
