I step into the butchershop. Feet feeling heavy and uncertain. I know my dad and Stan will be in there. Yet I feel my heart racing, terribly afraid. This is supposed to be "normal." Many weeks of grieving, and now we have to be adults. How is it that Stan even came in? Maybe that's why I'm so afraid. Over the speakers is some soft jazz. Almost like something Mama would listen to. But then the song ends and Jolene's all-time favorite song ever plays and inside, I can hear a quiet "ayyye". Dad sings along. If this was any time before, Stan would be watching with a goofy grin, getting ready to join in for the chorus. But this is after, so who knows what Stan is doing or feeling. It almost feels odd to announce my presence. I feel like no matter what I do, I carry Misty around with me. I'll walk into the shop, and Stan will stop in his tracks, looking at me like I'm a ghost. But I have to remember that the ghost isn't me. It's selfish to think so. Guilt washes over me with a thin sheen of sweat. I'm not ready to go back to work y–
"Kitty?" Stan asks as he turns the corner, carrying a box of wrapped up meats both raw and cooked. His eyes were wide and startled. For a second, I swear he noticeably looked behind me. Misty. I would do the same.
"Are you going somewhere?" I asked, ignoring his confusion. If Jolene and him are back to "normal," then I have to be too.
"Just an order. One of our regulars. Why are you in?" He softens his words, like he was afraid it would come across like an accusation.
"I have a job still, right?" I ask more genuine than I probably should be. Stan looked at me for a couple of moments, processing what I said before a wide smile spread across his face.
"Of course, KittyKitty. I just thought you'd be taking a bit more time." Softer. His tone gets softer, and it makes my stomach pang with guilt. Should I still be torn apart by grief?
"Being at home hurts too much." I close my eyes the second I say it. Honesty. Embarrassingly raw honesty. If I didn’t think he'd notice, I'd pinch my thigh until I bruised, but Stan has always been observant. He'd probably notice.
