Kitsuna is an enigma. An illusion
Born from loneliness, the Toronto native’s latest single, ‘Can I Love,’ comes at a strange and eerie time as he buries his heartbreak beneath cold, sleek layers. It’s the kind of track that wouldn’t look too out of place, appropriately enough, on an OVO compilation: hazy, seductive and even cinematic. There’s even a little 80s pop, jazz and 90s RnB in the mix.
It evokes a sort of ghostly futurism, one filled with midnight drives down empty highways or roving with your motorcycle gang through Neo-Tokyo. The soundtrack to vaporwave video, if you slow it down and add a little reverb. Not that ‘Can I Love’ needs it.
Yet as jaded and lost as Kitsuna might feel, there is a glimmer of hope by the time we reach the song’s dreamy, shimmering breakdown, that maybe you can love again and you can love enough at the same time. But before you can truly love, you must learn to live within. Love yourself first and foremost...
