When Dinner Goes Sour...
Sometimes I'm really proud of what I cook…and sometimes it just doesn't work. And I think it's fair when writing a food blog to share your mishaps as well as successes because cooking is trial and error. Well here's some of my learning experience... The other night I tried out a recipe adapted from Lottie and Doof (http://www.lottieanddoof.com/) Chicken kebabs marinated in a yogurt herb sauce with grilled vinegar potatoes (!!). The recipe is here http://www.lottieanddoof.com/2009/06/the-barbecue/. As soon as I read "grilling equivalent of salt and sour chips" it was on.
**Oh and by the way I am in no way criticizing Lottie and Doof, they're great! Visit that site and cook everything it all sounds too good to be true!**
The chicken kebabs were perfect, extremely moist and flavorful with a little bit of a bite from the lemon in the basil and garlic spread at the end, I will make them again and again. The potatoes though, which I had so many high hopes for fell flat.
Now this is not to say this wasn't totally from my own error but they were so vinegary it was hard to take a bite out of them without the smell of the vinegar stinging your nose. My boyfriend usually likes my cooking and when there are times that things could be tweaked or something tastes off he's not afraid to say so. This time there was no need the look on his face said it all.
Now the recipe calls for everything to be grilled. Living in a small apartment in Brooklyn this wasn't possible for me so I researched a bit to find out if it was worth it to try anyway. Many said broiling will do just fine so that's what I did. I think these potatoes are a dish that need to be prepared as the recipe calls for. They would have done well to have that smokey flavor that only grilling can provide. So be warned if you want to try this recipe either figure out what I did wrong or be prepared for a whole lotta sour!
