There is something infinitely fascinating about analogue electronic music. Perhaps it's the necessary talent and dedication required to coax desirable sound design from such complex technology. Or perhaps it's the gradual development and metamorphosis of the mainstays - buzzing waves and throbbing pulses - from impenetrable musique concrete to palatable compositions, back through 80's synth-molestation, inevitably to return to a genuine, innovative and evocative middle ground between the high points of its previous stops. Or perhaps, even, because electronic music is so difficult to figure from an outsider's perspective, that to take it from the realm of software and into a physical, visible world helps re-characterise it as symbiotic, real and composed.

Stockholm's Roll The Dice - two piece made up of one Fever Ray touring member and one ex-member of Kinky Machine (the band that would eventually become Lightning Seeds) - excel dystopically, mesmerisingly in all of the above. Clearly masters of the sinister, alchemic arts of manipulating and battling with LFO's, modulators and patch-bays, the richness and variation of their sound design demonstrates a real knowledge of the technology.

Like Actress (featured earlier this week), John Carpenter's name rarely strays far from reference points, though in Roll The Dice's case, we would be remiss to exclude the likes of Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Cluster, Harald Grosskopf and their modern contemporaries: Emeralds, Mist, Temporal Marauder.
