Summary: (Sequel to: Left Behind) The moments after the wedding, when King Leonard and Queen Consort Red are getting used to their new relationship. Â Expect some adult humor, but also a ton of sweetness.Â
Ch 1: Itâs All About the JewelsÂ
âI donât see why I have to wear this?â Red grumbled, staring at himself in the mirror. The âcrown-thingâ was pretty, but far too delicate for his tastes. Â
âIt shows that you are my Queen and Consort,â Leonard insisted.
âAgain, Iâm not sure why I need to have two titles. One is more than enough,â Red sighed, throwing his husband a look.
âThe title of Queen indicates that you are married to the King. Â The title of Consort means that you are male, not female. Â A âconsortâ normally has less power than the Queen, so both titles indicate that you are male, and have the power of a Queen in our kingdom,â the pig explained calmly.
âAll this royalty stuff seems needlessly complicated. Do we have to dress up for the portrait? Â We donât normally wear clothes; and everyone here knows who we are,â Red complained.
The bearded pig clasped his blue cloak around his neck, before letting out a deep sigh. Â He truly did adore his avian mate, but sometimes Red argued over the silliest things. Â Striding across the room, Leonard came to a stop behind the petite bird, his hoof coming to rest firmly on his silk-clad shoulder. Â âDo you really hate it that much, or are you just complaining for the sake of complaining?â
Red blinked up at him, then ducked his head in embarrassment.  âSorry, I just⌠donât see why this is necessary.â Â
âI know,â Leonard said, squeezing the birdâs shoulder for support. âBeing a member of the royal family comes with certain expectations, and youâre not used to it yet. Â I appreciate you doing this for me. Â The crown isnât that bad, is it?â Â
âItâs just⌠not my thing.  Although, Iâm pretty sure itâs something Chuck would wear,â Red stated, frowning into the mirror at the glittering crown on his head.
âYour little yellow friend does seem the type to enjoy shiny jewelry,â Leonard chuckled. A troubling though crossed his mind, and he was quick to add, âPlease donât give him permission to wear your crown⌠or mine.â
Red threw a smirk over his shoulder at his green-skinned husband. âDonât worry, your crown jewels are safe with me.â
Leonard couldnât help chuckling at that. Â Good thing they were alone in the wardrobe room.
âWhat? Â Did I say something weird again?â the avian asked, raising an eyebrow.
âDonât worry about it,â Leonard stated, leaning down to give his adorable bride a kiss on the cheek.

He should have explained the joke. Â He really, REALLY should have explained the joke.
âChuck, get back here with those! Â Leonard specifically said you werenât allowed to touch his crown jewels!â
âCome on, Red. Iâm your best friend. Â You should learn to share!â
Around the table, Leonard could hear his advisors beginning to chuckle under their breaths. A yellow blurr raced into the room, leaped onto the main table, and came to a stop inches from the kingâs seated form. Â âCome on, Leonard. You donât mind if I touch your crown jewels, right?â
Every pig in the room went silent, hunching down in their seats as the king rose to his feet to tower over the idiotic bird.  âChuckâŚâ Leonard began slowly, his anger simmering beneath the surface. The childish avian was perched on the edge of the table, his long beak inches from the pigâs face. Around his neck were several priceless necklaces, and perched on his head was his queenâs personal crown.
âWow, you do not look happy. Is Red not giving you enough lovinâ in the bedroom? Chuck jabbered mindlessly. Â
âRed is not the issue here, Chuck,â Leonard growled.
âReally? Â Donât tell me youâre actually upset about these shiny things,â the yellow bird commented, pulling the end of one of the necklaces away from his feathers to gaze at it. It was at that very moment that Red skidded into the room.
âThose things are priceless,â the king stated, clenching his hooves in an attempt to control his temper. His gaze flickered over to his queen as the crimson bird came to stand next to his chair, before landing back on the annoying and loudly-colored avian on the table.
âSee, theyâre not even worth anything,â Chuck argued, pouting.
âWhat Leonard means is that theyâre irreplaceable,â Red interjected, his foot tapping impatiently on the floor.
Chuck gasped loudly, his eyes immediately filling with tears as he choked out, âYou mean â like Billy?â
Leonard raised a brow at his mateâs suddenly guilty look. Â There was a story here, he just didnât know what it was.
âYes, sort of,â Red admitted, shifting uncomfortably.
The tears were gone, replaced by a deadened look as the shorter bird hopped down from the table to stand in front of Red. âMy poor, innocent, lovely Billy â who you mercilessly pulverized in a fit of anger.â
Red rubbed between his eyes, before throwing his wings in the air. Â âTell you what, Iâll help you build a new Billy.â Chuck squealed in happiness, making several of the pigs in the room wince. âBut you have to give Leonard back his crown jewels,â the crimson bird added firmly. A snort of laughter from one of the pigs at the table had Leonard glaring at his men.
âFine. Party pooper,â the yellow bird grumbled, plopping the jewelry on the table with a huff. Â Leonard rushed to catch the delicate crown before it toppled off the edge.
âSorry for interrupting your meeting, Leonard. There was a â tiny â incident in the wardrobe room. It may have involved Bomb, and led to Chuck trying on several things that he should not have run away with, but I already have some of the men working on repairing the damage to the wall,â Red insisted.Â
âItâs fine. You did the right thing by making sure that the issue had been promptly dealt with,â Leonard assured him, taking in the adorable way his queen fidgeted when he was uncertain if he was in trouble. Â Their eyes met, and Red quirked a smile at him before striding after his yellow friend.
The king was just about to restart the meeting when Chuckâs voice reached him from the doorway. Â âYou know, his eyes get soft when he looks at you,â the yellow bird was commenting to his queen.
âStop joking around,â Red answered.
âIâve seen you look at him like that, too,â Chuck continued. The aviansâ voices trailed off as they rounded the corner, but the yellow oneâs words were now stuck in Leonardâs head like glue. Â
âMeeting adjourned for today. Â We will resume at 0800 hours tomorrow,â the king ordered. The other pigs were quick to scurry out of the meeting hall, leaving Leonard to his thoughts. Â Â

âSo, this is Billy.â Leonard stared at the odd creature flopping back and forth on the front lawn. Â
âBilly 2.0. Â Back and better than ever!â Chuck insisted, hugging his bizarre creation lovingly.
âAnd still as horrifying as the first one,â Red whispered to his husband. Â
âWe donât have to leave it in the front yard forever, do we? Â Itâs rather terrifying,â Leonard whispered, leaning down to be closer to his mate.
âAs soon as Bomb and Chuck have their OWN home, Iâll make sure they take it with them,â the avian insisted.

(later that night)
âWe were talking about your what?â Red nearly shouted in shock, before bursting into laughter. Â
Leonard found himself chuckling, as well. Â âItâs true. Â There are jewels, and then there are crown jewels.â
âI am so sorry about that. Â And about Chuck. Â He is not the easiest bird to tolerate,â Red stated, collapsing back onto the bed. Swiftly, he rolled over to face his smiling mate. Â
âYou know, this is just really, really weird, when you think about it,â the bird mumbled, staring into his husbandâs dark eyes.
âWhat is?â Leonard asked, reaching over to stroke his avian queenâs side. Â His crimson feathers were as soft as silk. Â
âThis thing we have going.  Less than a year ago, we were at war.  And now weâre⌠well, strangely happy, and married, and raising three children.  Thatâs huge, Leonard,â Red admitted, tilting his head as he gazed up at his larger mate.
âYeah, but what a year itâs been. Â I have apologized for stealing your islandâs unborn children, havenât I?â Leonard wondered aloud, shuffling closer to the smaller male. Â
âYou have. Â And youâve been very good at keeping your word. Â I still have no desire to see you or anyone else eating unfertilized eggs,â Red stated softly.
âAnd as much as I love our children, I never want to see you regurgitate food for them again â unless I have no other choice. Â Their needs do come first,â Leonard admitted.
Red was smiling now, despite feeling a bit uncertain. Then, quick as his yellow friend was known for being, he darted closer and nuzzled the other manâs cheek with his beak. Â Having such an intimate closeness with another person, especially his once-sworn enemy, was still rather strange to him. Â
âI love you as well, Red,â Leonard said, bringing one of the birdâs crimson wings to his mouth to press a loving kiss to it. Â The bird in question blushed under his feathers, but didnât try to tug his wing away. Â Instead, he slid closer to nuzzle against the pigâs bare chest. Â They were such an odd couple, but Red couldnât find the energy to care. Â He was happy, and life was better than it had ever been.
