STARTER for ser criston / @kingmaketh ft. alicent hightower
'i know not how you have the patience to deal with the antics of those boys. never a day passes when aegon or aemond do not find some mischief for themselves.' her tone is awash with exasperation but there is no mistaking the warm affection imbued within her words as her dark brown eyes follow the departing figures of her two eldest sons as they race each other back from the training yard into the keep. 'tell me, how are they faring? it comforts me to know that they are learning under your watchful eye but—' a pause as her bottom lip is drawn between pursed teeth. if only her sons could understand the fleeting nature of youth. she would not have them jettison the vestiges of their remaining innocence yet she would also have them be prepared for the trials to come. 'still I worry that it may not be enough. aemond has a sharp mind and uncommonly perceptive for his age but aegon, I wish he could see the future as I do.'
she loves her eldest son with the inherent ferocity felt by many mothers towards their firstborn but the love she bears him does not mean she is blinded to the glimmers of faults. he has lived a coddled life and she fears it will make him complacent. 'should he ever need it, I have no doubt that aegon will be able to rely on aemond to be his sword and shield but I would that he were not so lost in the pleasures of youth.' she fears her eldest does not understand the importance of moderation. 'aegon's future will not be smooth simply because he wishes it to be so. you know as well as I that there are many at court who would wish him harm if only because he is the king's firstborn son and my child.' it is unlike her to speak with such candor but if not with ser criston then who?
