The two sat atop the grassy hill at the tip of the town, the sun beginning to set, the golden and pink and blue hues casting a beautiful glow over the sleepy houses. A light breeze ran through the hills tonight, and it was rather nice- only the tip of Emmaâs nose and ears were turning the slightest shade of pink.
âNow, look, right there. Thatâs the first star youâll see- a star called Vega. Itâs bright and quite hot and could look like Venus if youâre not careful.â Killian pointed a ring-clad finger towards the horizon at a shiny little light in the distance. Killian had been waiting for this night all week. He and Emma had made a promise- If Killian at least  would give using a cell phone a shot(Emma liked to know where he was at all times, but she never told him that.), he could take her to watch the stars. And now, as the sun pulled lower and lower, and the night sky became an indigo blue, and the twinkle and shine of the stars began to show, Emma realized just how much Killian knew about stars.
âThere are 57 important navigational stars, lass. You use them to find oneâs position in the world with a dreary formula I couldnât possibly teach you in one night.â Killian had a silly little grin on his face and his cheeks were just the slightest bit flushed- he loved talking about the stars. He had his own personal star maps tucked deep into the pages of his journal and he knew the positions of every single constellation at every single season. He actually had his entire conversation for tonight planned in his head-for he didnât know how to explain the fact that his very own, original star map was of the stars that when connected, looked like Emmaâs profile. He adored the idea of being able to find her face at night, when the ship was rocking and the waves were rolling and the breeze felt salty on his face.
âLay down on your back.â he said loudly, breaking the frail silence of the night.
âKillian, I came here to watch the stars, not to have sex.â Emma sighed, her voice taking on the slightest edge.
âThatâs not what I meant, lass. I meant lay down so that you can see the sky fuller.â Killian grouched, joining Emma as they both laid down on the fleece plaid  blanket, their bodies almost touching, Killian so close that Emma could feel his body heat radiating off of him.
She looked up and  her breath immediately caught in her throat. The entire night sky was overrun with stars, of all shapes and sizes and colors and the luminescence was quite overwhelming. âItâs so much more beautiful than the New York City night sky.â Emma said, her neck craning to take in every possible star that she could see.
Killian turned his head to the side to watch Emma, her eyes filled with twinkling stars, her hands relaxed at the sides, her nose round and a bit red. She looked so beautiful. She was smiling just a bit as she looked around, attempting to identify constellations. Just as she was intoxicated with the feeling of the starry night sky, he was intoxicated with her.
âIsnât it?â He shot his head upward and away from her as she turned to him. He hoped she didnât pick up on the fact that he was watching her. âYes, love. Terrible.â He grimaced slightly at the memory of squinting up at the city sky, colored slightly orange from all the lights around him.
He didnât like that at all, for he couldnât find Emma in the stars for all that time whilst sleeping on park benches and handling the mass confusion from street vendors when they didnât take gold dubloons. But gods, was that no longer a problem, for he grinned at seeing the rounded tip of Emmaâs nose in between Taurus and Ursa Minor before him.
âTell me any constellations you recognize.â He told her, but really just so he could study her face and her neck and the slope of her shoulder to her elbow to her wrist and the hair that fell in golden curls around her. As Emma began to shout out Sagittaurius and Ursa Major and Leo and other constellations Killian knew she only knew because they were popular, he couldnât help but chuckle a little.
âWhat? Those are right arenât they?â Emma narrowed her eyes.
âYes, love. But do you even know where they are?â His tongue rolled along his bottom lip in pure amusement as he watched Emma admit defeat.
âNot even a single clue.â
âWell then, let me show you.â he grabbed the hand lying limply on her side, pushing down each little finger until only her pointer was left upright. âSee that orange star? Thatâs Borealis. Now look slightly to the left.â His voice got quieter and quieter as he spoke, taking on a light talk-whisper as he guided her hand to a constellation sheâd named earlier. âThat one is Leo. Pretty, isnât it?â
âVery pretty.â She stared up at it and Killian found himself turning his head to the side again, just to look at her in pure adoration at the stars.
âShow me another one.â
And so he did. And he did again. And he did again. And he showed her constellations until her head somehow wound up on his chest, and his hand somehow was wrapped around her shoulders, and the soft fleece blanket was somehow cocooning the two of them together.
But he still kept on talking, telling her constellations that were his favorite and stars that his brother taught him and that one day heâll show her the star map he has of her. She wasnât listening to what he was even saying, for she was only focusing on the deep, warm vibrations coming from his chest as he spoke, the hand wrapped tight around her shoulder. Even Killian wasnât listening to what he was saying, occasionally glancing down to see her little blonde head nuzzled into his chest. And he loved it. (he wasnât going to ever admit that, because much to the fact of Emma telling him sheâd be so wrapped up by him she couldnât breathe when they woke up, he was not a cuddler.)
So when he began to play with a wavy lock of hair as they both began to drift asleep, she tipped her head up his direction, her eyelids heavy.
âThank you, Killian.â
âFor what, Swan?â he said quietly.
âFor telling me about something you love.â
And with that he kissed her, and this time Emma definitely saw the stars.
