Bristol Comic Con
So I guess I won't update before we go...
Well after a laborious night full of last minute preparations, (with special thanks credited to the girlfriend and our resident Letterer, Dhalia; for their"steady" hands.) everything was ready and I headed to bed. Judas arrived next morning; early, as Judas will, and after much deliberating on my part we left for the Bristol Comic Con. We arrived and eventually set up, the Con already busy by that time, due to some short sightedness on my part for various prep materials. Despite these seemingly endless false starts that accompany any kind of showcasing of my work... I think back to a time where I never own showed up at my own exhibits. Now I'm actively engaging with people that show an interest... and turning up nearly on time. I am slowly evolving into bulbasaur.
DHALIA & JUDAS, BRISTOL COMIC CON 2013
When finally set up the table looked sweet, (see above.) with the postcards really doing a Ronseal*, (exactly what it says on the tin.) bringing in the casual viewer as intended. I'm glad they were as well received as expected, as I really enjoyed the whole project, and in the thick of storyboarding/ drawing future chapters in the 3 or so weeks preceding each Comic Con it will be a nice little break. I also really enjoyed adding the "Before & After" pages to the portfolio, completing three in time for the Con, only regretting not completing them all as they were so popular, the portfolio utilized much more effectively this time. Everything about this Comic Con from our actual exhibit to the Con itself worked. The fact that we were in the main room, made all the difference too - the Cardiff Con, seemed chaotic in comparison. (thank you PRguy!)
The day was over quickly, but a few notable conclusions by the end;
I should of done the Before & After page for the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
taking a sip of Brandy everytime a hot cosplay girl walks past is a short game.
there are a lot more of "them" then there are of us.
Paul VanDick(?) is a nice guy, who knows Judas surprisingly well, and whose exhibit is best described as "minimalist".
Starbucks chicken,tomato whatever - is not cool.
I should of done the Before & After page for the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Amid the shenanigans we saw the legend that is Stuart from UKComics,whose Lord Of The Rings-esque quest to be at every comic con ever continues on, and even our illustrious PR guy made an appearance surprisingly early for him too - ie. actually on the Saturday. All in all it was a good day and after am brief excursion for food, we went to an after party of sorts, spending much of the short-lived evening with the "Creator of Monsters" Tim Clarke, an awesome guy, whose "character profiling" of his various creations, spans an extensive back catalogue of pretty impressive stuff.
Unfortunately, an enormous meal, milkshake and the aforementioned brandy drinking game, left us somewhat flat for the evening, and exhausted we headed back fairly early... (compared to previous escapades.) catching A Bronx Tale on TV in the hotel, and getting to sleep shortly after. The Sunday, was busier than anticipated, the second day usually being considerably quieter. We sold out of the "Site of the Ol Suspension Bridge" postcard and strangely sold more comics than the previous day...
Site of the old Suspension Bridge, (the last one!)
In summary; It was a good time. I'd like to go on but alas I must wrap this up... Derry is just a few short weeks away. Before then, I intend to complete three images of Derry ready for print, add the "Before & After" pages to the portfolio for those three, and then the other two images I didn't for Bristol. There are also some minor tweaks here and there... but all completely feasible within the given time scale.
I'll update more soon as I can. EDIT: * Thank you Virtue. Shout outs: ZIP, "TJ". That is all. A.S. OUT.
