Charadrius vociferus, May 10th 2026
This killdeer pair we spotted on Sunday had chicks, but the chicks were too tiny to photograph well without harassing them, so we kept our distance. We did get to watch the male do a broken wing display when a couple of crows got too curious about the babies. It's such a vulnerable time for the chicks and it really moved me watching these parents hover anxiously over them.
Killdeer hold cultural importance for many Native American tribes as symbols of protection, vigilance, and resilience, often appearing in folklore as clever, protective spirits due to their "broken-wing" distraction display. The Talumni Yokuts tribe of California viewed the killdeer as a guardian of the river that souls pass over after death, acting as a watchful sentinel that warns against danger.
Even if you haven’t seen one, chances are good you’ve heard this notoriously noisy shorebird.
