your head snapped up toward the front door of the flower shop when you heard the bright chime of the bell, signaling that another customer had come in. it was slightly startling since, although days there were never busy in the first place, today was especially slow, the shop having been completely empty for almost half an hour now. with excitement, you flashed a smile at whoever had entered, which faded almost instantly when you saw the puffy, red-eyed state he was in.
he looked like he couldn’t be anymore than a year older than you, maybe even the same age. the only difference was that he was significantly more distressed than you were. you did your best to bring your smile back, a quiet “what can i help you with today?” falling from your lips. he made his way over to the counter and moved his glasses up a bit to wipe his eyes with the sleeve of his sweatshirt.
“how do you say ‘fuck you i hope i never have to cross paths with you in this or any lifetime ever again’ with a bouquet?”
you gave him a sympathetic look before taking out a notepad to start writing down suggestions. the sight of him standing there sniffling was as pitiful as it was awkward, thus you made a somewhat successful attempt to make light conversation with him.
“a breakup? or…”
“yeah. caught her with another guy while i was out with my hallmates.”
there was a few seconds of uncomfortable silence while you searched for your next words.
“hallmates?”
“yeah, i go right here at belift uni.”
you raised an eyebrow as you continued to jot down notes.
“i go there too. what year are you?”
“first”
“me too.”
another silence fell between you, this one slightly more comfortable than the last, but this time he was the one to speak up first.
“you ever had to make a breakup bouquet for yourself before? you seem like you know what you’re doing.” he joked, and attempted to give a small smile.
a soft, breathy laugh left your lips as you admitted,“i haven’t even had a boyfriend yet.”
his laughter in return sounded like music to your ears, a small blush creeping onto your cheeks as you wrote his order into the shop’s computer system.
“when do you want the bouquet by?” you asked him.
“i’m gonna give her stuff back tomorrow.” he paused for a moment. “will you be here again then?”
you smiled. “yeah, i will. also, that’ll be $37.89.”
he handed you his debit card, which you swiped before handing back to him.
“and can i get your name for your order?
“park jongseong.” he stated, although he was much more interested in something else. “and what might your name be?”
“yn.”

you knew exactly what you were waiting for the next day, though you didn’t want to admit it to yourself. yet, you found yourself looking excitedly toward the door every time you heard that familiar bell chime, only for your face to fall when you realized it wasn’t him.
however, after about an hour into your shift, the bell chime brought in that familiar face that you had been waiting for. he was a bit more dressed up this time, wearing jeans and a button down shirt, his hair styled rather than looking tousled like how he was when he first came in, and he wasn’t wearing his glasses. had he always been this cute?
his demeanor had changed since yesterday too, a new resolve plastered across his face, which you deeply admired, but of course you wouldn’t let him know that. you were just the girl giving him a breakup bouquet for his cheating ex.
he made his way to the front counter, flashing you a smile, and declaring he was here to pick up the flowers. you smiled back at him, instructing him to wait there a moment while you went and got the bouquet from the back. you brought it to him, and explained what each flower in the arrangement meant.
“the geraniums mean stupidity, the foxgloves mean insincerity, the meadowsweets mean uselessness, the yellow carnations mean you have disappointed me, and the orange lilies mean hatred.”
he tilted his head at the bouquet and gave it a look that you couldn’t quite decipher.
“do you not like it?
he put his hands up almost defensively.
“oh, what, no! i love it. i was just thinking how pretty it is, so it’ll be even funnier because of how passive aggressive everything will seem.”
you handed him the bouquet and waved him off with good luck as he made his way to the front door. he had placed his hand on the door to push it open when he stopped and turned back around to you.
“hey, i owe you one now for picking out a bouquet like this for me, so let me take you out to dinner after your shift ends tonight.”
he laughed at the look of surprise that fell on your face, and even more when you stuttered out something about that being hardly necessary, but he persisted.
“i mean it. besides, saying i’m just showing my gratitude toward you is just me covering up for how pretty i think you are.” he shot a playful smirk at you, which made your cheeks heat up.
-ˏˋ y/n: your average struggling university first-year trying to juggle passing her anatomy class and healing from past bullying incidents at the same time. enjoyer of cats, momo, and pretty-looking cakes.
-ˏˋ momo: yn’s emotional support bestie and #1 fan since the beginning of time, knows just about everything and anything about yn, you’ll almost never catch them apart from each other.
-ˏˋ wonwoo: usually found with his nose in a book or headphones on, typing away on his laptop. yn’s other slightly overprotective best friend who’s wanted nothing more but to see her confident again after they graduated high school, and most definitely does not have a crush on her and wants to own a cat with her.
-ˏˋ seungcheol: yn’s parental figure bestie pt. 1. is usually the level-headed voice of reasoning in the friend group, and although he acts annoyed by it, he loves taking care of everyone else.
-ˏˋ jeonghan: yn’s (extremely less responsible) parental figure bestie pt. 2. loves playing devil’s advocate against seungcheol just to watch him get frustrated, but at the same time, somehow always says exactly what people need to hear at the right time. besides the group, he hangs out often with boo seungkwan, whom he met in his music appreciation class.
-ˏˋ minghao: very handsome, very popular, and very too perfect. sometimes the group can’t believe that he even had time to hang out with them during highschool while balancing his modeling shoots and music recording with lee jihoon, but he has proven multiple times that he truly loves his friends as much as they love him.
-ˏˋ jun: minghao’s quieter yet more chaotic partner in crime and often cat cafe visitor along wonwoo. that one quiet kid in school who everyone would spill tea around because no one thought he was paying attention, but he actually was paying attention and now everyone in his friend group has the tea on everyone because he told them.
-ˏˋ mingyu: the designated group teddy bear, always ready for hugs and comfort whenever anyone needs it. always seems to be the first one running to his friends’ needs and comforting them, but that doesn’t mean they’re not there for him as well!

-ˏˋ chan: yn’s past school bully in middle/high school, who, now that he’s crossed paths with her again, is doing all he can to make those years up to her and try and fix a beyond broken relationship.
-ˏˋ seungkwan: chan’s best and childhood friend, named the groupchat because even though chan isn’t a performing arts major student, everyone else is, and majority rules. chan protector 1/3, and constant soonyoung arguer. sometimes hangs out with yoon jeonghan, which no one really knows where he came from.
-ˏˋ soonyoung: chan protector 2/3 and ball of energy. here for a good time, not a long time. adds chaos to the usually normal group, either by bickering with seungkwan or bothering jihoon while he’s trying to make music, but it’s more cute rather than annoying.
-ˏˋ seokmin: chan protector 3/3 and is the group’s sunshine virus. overall a very comforting presence to have around, and many people call him cute. also here for a good time but a longer time than soonyoung, so he often has to rationalize all his thoughts.
-ˏˋ jihoon: no one has ever seen him wear close-toed shoes ever. he wore gucci slides to their graduation, which soonyoung still says is the best thing he’s ever seen in his life. can usually be found producing music with vernon and his vocal “prodigies”, minghao and joshua.
-ˏˋ vernon: the group’s easygoing, cat-loving, best friend. has a super dry sense of humor which makes him absolutely hilarious to be around. apprenticing jihoon in the world of music producing, and has an unhealthy obsession with joshua’s voice.
-ˏˋ joshua: the group’s one (1) single brain cell, except he hangs around with vernon every day, so that one brain cell is usually being used trying to answer his questions like if a burger is a sandwich, or singing for him.
