CELEBRATE DIVERSITY
I get slightly irritated every time someone says that the slogan of this yearโs ESCย โโCelebrate diversityโโ doesnโt suit the chosen entries because most of them areย โโBallads in Englishโโ. While it is true that the overwhelming majority of songs are in English, letโs not forget and appreciate the musical diversity this year has given us:ย The modern party songs of Sweden, Israel and Greece and the unique ethno entries from Hungary and Armenia. The uplifting and cheerful Belarus and Austria, the dark and mysterious Finland and Poland. The powerful Albania and Georgia and the happy feel-good Moldova and Spain. The rocking Ukraine and the classy ballads of Australia, Bulgaria and UK. ย The divine beats of Cyprus, Serbia and Macedonia and the light-hearted and adorable Romania. The sweet sincerity of Portugal, Czech Republic, Russia, Malta, and the liveliness of Italy. The elegant France, electro Latvia, and upbeat Montenegro. The contemporary and atmospheric Azerbaijan, Belgium, the uniqueness of Croatia. The dynamic Lithuania, San Marino, Denmark and the feeling of nostalgia from Slovenia and Ireland. The Dutch entry which never fails to make me shed a tear, and the German one which always makes me smile. And letโs not forget the soothing mid-tempo songs of Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Estonia.ย This yearโs contest has been great, I couldnโt be more satisfied with the songs which have been chosen. :)
BIG 5 - ITALY
Francesco Gabbaniโs song for Italy is already the hot favourite for the Eurovision crown this year.
Mixing humour (and Harambe?) with whatโs been described to me as โold fashioned Italian discoโ (is that a thing?), heโs a very engaging performer.
Not quite as gorgeous as previous Italian entries (Mengoni anyone?), and Italy have consistently been the nearly-there-but-not-quite-winners since their return, but this will (almost) definitely be Top 5.
