each   &   every time her siblings leave her behind for a mission   ,   number seven paces the halls like a specter.   not one of four’s ghosts   ,   she thinks   ,   but one from an old book.   wandering ancient buildings.   the type that’s always wailing.   she doesn’t wail   ,   of course   ,   cannot possibly imagine how father would react if quiet seven were to create such a cacophony   ,   but sometimes   ,   everything in her yearns to.   she wants to make the sort of sound that says i am here   ,   i insist on being heard   ,   you cannot pretend i am invisible forever   ,   i exist.   whatever it takes.

here is the point   :   seven knows fear.   she’s well acquainted with the terror that comes with watching from the balcony as her siblings file into the mansion   &   counting them one by one   ,   then again   ,   then again   ,   until it adds up to six and she can breathe again.   father acts as if their missions are not dangerous   ,   &   she still half - believes him in that naive childish way that she believes he loves her because that is what fathers do   —   but she’s also seen her siblings blood - stained too many times   ,   all of them not even a decade old but with so much red on their hands.   someday   ,   one of them is not going to return from a mission.   she feels the truth of that in the pit of her stomach   —   an unbearable weight.   it sometimes feels as if all that scaredness will burst out of her   ,   tear down the academy   &   make itself known in the most terrible way.   (   someday   ,   someday   ,   someday.   ) 

‘   ‘s’okay to be scared   ,   ’      she says   ,   and she reaches out to cover four’s hand with her own.   it seems to her that he has plenty to be afraid of   —   she hasn’t missed the way he sometimes looks at a blank space in the room with wide eyes   ,   jumps a bit as if he’s noticed something he should not be seeing.   seven observes because there is little else for her to do.      ‘   you know   ,   i think everyone’s scared most of the time.   ’      her evidence may only be the two of them   ,   but six is afraid of thunderstorms and that makes three   ,   and she saw three yell when a spider made its way into her room   —   four out of seven isn’t a bad percentage for her claim.      ‘   but i think you’re really brave.   ‘cuz even when you are scared   ,   you still go on missions with everyone   ,   and do training   ,   and make jokes.   when i’m scared   ,   i don’t feel like i can do anything at all   —   which means you’re really   ,   really brave.   ’
