it’s honestly p interesting how the vast majority of the fandom latched onto ace and mourned his death the way they did bc he was never intended to really be a ‘character’ so to speak
he existed to back luffy into a corner and hammer in for the viewer that the straw hats were not ready for the new world. oda said himself ace was a character who was meant to die from the beginning, which is evident by the fact that ace himself doesn’t really have much substance aside from being the cool older brother luffy loves and admires
this isn’t even a complaint against oda - it’s writing 101 to have characters with assigned roles for them to complete and do throughout the story. comedic relief, villains, protagonists - all characters have to be designed with a specific role in mind to be good, otherwise they’re just kinda going through the motions without any intended ‘end’ in mind. its definitely just surprising to see people not just crying over luffy, but ace as well despite ace existing to only service luffy’s character
his incredible grasp on empathy, and making his readers truly feel for even the smallest of characters is one of the many things that defined pre-marineford oda

thats not even mentioning komurasaki or o-kiku or w/e, who literally have zero character. i honestly don't know how to describe any of the wano women without using the words nice, kind, or sweet. And i only describe them as such bc they have no other personality traits
