Here we go! Angst ahoy and do note there is some descriptive fighting in here. Shout-out to the anon whose wonderful suggestion about Halwardâs irritation helped this chap get going, and to the usual cheerleaders, for whom I am eternally grateful! In case you missed it:
Part 1
Hissrad wandered the halls of the estate two hours later, fresh from a long walk around the grounds and a tumble with one of the stablehands. The latter took the edge off some of his lingering frustration, though it did nothing to ease the weight of the collar around his throat. He sweet talked an orange from one of the kitchen maids and finally headed back towards Dorianâs room, not looking forward to what was sure to be an immense amount of pouting when he got there.
The boy was not alone, however: a strong voice echoed into the hallway. Hissrad hung back, listening.
ââdid you say, precisely?â It was Halward, tone authoritative and holding no small amount of accusation.
âI was only trying to help,â Dorian replied, âitâs a Pavusâs responsibility to see to the well-being of those in his employ.â Hissrad scowled at Dorian parroting the empty rhetoric back to his father, doubtless that Halward was the source. âEmploy.â Yeah, right. âIâŠhe seemed like he was unhappy, and I tried toâŠâ
âDorian,â Halward cut off, â-it is not his job to be happy any more than it is yours to be concerned about his mindset. We care for him as well as we do the other servants. He is here to be your bodyguard.â
âButâŠbut Hissrad saidâŠâ
âThe Qunari are not like us, Dorian.â It took everything Hissrad not to barge into that room and show Halward just now many ways the two of them were different; the weight at his neck and wrists reminded him how fruitless such an attack would be. It did not keep the red from Hissradâs sight as Halward continued. âWe joke that the oxmen are mindless, soulless beasts, but very little of that is true. They are cunning, and they are the greatest threat the Imperium shall ever face. It is why your guardian was chosen, Dorian: he is smart, and he is ruthless. He can do the job effectively. That is also why he is collared when none of our other servants are. The servants can be trusted. He cannot.â
Silence, then: âHow can he protect meâŠhow can I feel safe if I canât trust him?â
âThe Qun has no place for compassion or sympathy, Dorian. The Qunari value utility over all else. They do not have personalities as we do. They do not even have names, only jobs. We gave him new purpose when we brought him here, one he is well capable of, but you must always remember: he is neither your playmate nor your friend.â Â A pregnant pause, stillness disturbed not at all. Â âDo I make myself clear?
âYes Father,â Dorian replied. He sounded resigned but he did not hesitate.
âGood. I tell you these things because you must know them, and always protect yourself.â Dorian made a small noise of acknowledgement. Â âNow, get some rest, my son. You are still unwell,â the sound of lips brushing against too-hot skin met Hissradâs ears and he backtracked, doubling down a side hall and heading outside before Halward noticed him.
He suddenly had another errand to run.
Hissrad found Farad in what looked like a practice court, going through complex practice forms with a pole arm. The elfâs dark skin was flushed darker, his braid trailing behind him as he blazed through the motions. Dust rose in thin clouds everywhere his feet fell, particulate billowing around him in the still air.
âSo thatâs how itâs going to go, huh?â Hissrad snapped, losing no time. His anger seared hot in his chest. âEvery little thing you hear, you run to the magister?â
Farad slowed just enough to catch Hissradâs eye, his eyes darkening. Â "That surprises you?â Â Hissrad opened his mouth to respond; the elf did not give him time to do so, following the sweep of his weapon back across the ring. "I look after my own,â he growled, still spinning and striking, moving seamlessly from one strike to the next. Â âYou have yet to decide whether that includes you, and so have I.â
âThat right?â Farad barked something that sounded like a âyes.â Â âIsnât that against the slave code?â
âIt is, but you are no slave, as you so frequently point out.â Farad snapped the weapon down, finishing the kata with a deadly flourish. His smile bared every one of his teeth, meeting Hissradâs scowl inch for inch. âI have not been untruthful with you. Neither have I been unkind.â Â He spat on the ground, chest still heaving from the effort of the practice dance. Â "I may start.â
Hissrad shrugged his shoulders back, cracked his neck side to side, feeling tension build on the air like a static charge. Â This. This was what he needed, a good throw down to settle his nerves after Dorianâs ignorant bullshit and Halwardâs equally infuriating explanations. Â Farad certainly seemed willing to oblige his need to fight, brown eyes nearly blazing as he rolled the stave through his fingers. "That a threat?â
âNo. I do not make threats.â Faradâs tone bore no challenge; he stated it like fact. âI find I do not need to.â Hissrad barked a laugh at that, his own back straightening as he felt the familiar warmth of battle seeping into his bones, sharpening the sights and sounds around him as his senses keyed into full responsiveness. Â Farad tossed him a different practice weapon: a two handed sword, blade dulled but obviously well made. It was weighted perfectly and it cleared the fugue in his head, having a weapon in his hand again. A weapon was a tool that had one use, clarity of purpose symbolized. There was a simplicity in a weapon one rarely found anywhere else.
The weight of it shook loose his tongue, as well as his arrogance. "Big words, old man.â
âWhen have you known me to mince words, little calf? It is the truth. Now come,â Farad fell back into a ready stance, feet bladed shoulder width apart on the opposite side of the ring. His smile was unkind. âIt is high time we sparred again, donât you agree?â Â Hissrad grunted an affirmative, hefting his practice sword to his shoulder. âThree rounds.â Â Farad was nearly humming with tension now, Hissrad could see it in his shoulders, in the bobbing of his weight before theyâd even attacked. Still Farad waited for Hissradâs agreement, the smallest nod of his head.
Farad exploded into motion, staff leveled perpendicular to the ground and gripped in one hand. He leapt sharply right to avoid Hissradâs first sweeping swing, the blade whistling as it sliced the air behind him. Again he swung and again Farad dodged, twice then three times more. Hissrad squared his feet, rotating to meet the next follow-up to his strike, anticipating one of the flourishes Farad typically used when rapidly changing direction.
The error made itself known as pain blossomed in Hissradâs jaw, a straightforward jab that brought the butt of the pole arm to meet the juncture of bone. The weapon wasnât bladed, thankfully, but the weight of it still shot stars into Hissradâs vision and snapped his head back. Before he could correct the imbalance in his weight he felt the heavy wooden pole crack into the back of his knees. Hissrad buckled, landing on his ass in the dirt.
âFirst round, mine.â
âSomeoneâs pissy today,â Hissrad growled, irritated heâd fallen so fast. Â Heâd expected Farad to fight less cleanly, given the clear influence of his emotions on his form. Â Rather than an influx of mistakes, however, the elf had simply cut out the flow out of his normal style. Moves meant for redirecting energy and inertia had become choppy, jabs rather than sweeps and spins. Â ââThe fuck crawled up your ass and died?â
âHow pathetic that you have to ask.â Farad shot back.
âYou canât be this mad over what I said to the âvint.â Â Farad made a feral sound low in his throat and launched himself forward; Hissrad, barely back to his feet, rushed to defend. When heâd managed to trip the elf and break the assault he stepped back, eyes wide. âHoly shit, seriously? Youâre defending your owner from the big bad Qunari? Shit. Youâre a loyal dog, Iâll give you that.â
Farad came at him, diving, striking, attack after attack that left no room for quarter. Â His blows were fierce, his swings deliberate. Frenzied. The elf was always fast but this was different, a rabid channeling of something far deeper. It took him from âlight on his feetâ to 'utter force of natureâ and frankly, fighting against the lightning-fast elf wielding a 6 foot pole arm, Hissrad found himself outclassed on speed.
Utterly outclassed, if his inability to land a solid hit was any indication. He nicked Farad as the man darted about, glancing blows with blade or fist that would do little more than bruise. Hissrad opted to play it conservative, forcing Farad to get closer and initiate repeatedly, his bare feet digging into the pounded dirt of the ring each time he leapt. He had to get the man to fall into a pattern so he could break into a weak moment, knock him off balance as his guard fell, but that proved difficult. Â They circled and struck as the minutes stretched on, the breeze dying down. Both fighters made no sound beyond their heavy breathing; the low thud of each block; the small, guttural noises as each of their attempts to advance was rebuffed.
Farad took the second round as well, breaking the pattern of attack and riposte when he abandoned all pretense of a clean fight and dove, rolling past as Hissradâs sword point stabbed into the ground. The Qunari snarled as a heavy pull on one horn dragged him sideways and down, the rest of his weight forced to follow as Farad dropped him like a rogue steer. Â The imagery wasnât lost on Hissrad. Instead of getting angrier, though, he deflected the surge of emotion right back at Farad.
âYou really are pissed off, arenât you? All because I told the kid the fucking truth?â Hissrad sneered, thus initiating round three. Â Faradâs face flushed darker with more than just adrenaline as the two resumed, more bursts of purple and black blooming on both.
âThis whole thing is bullshit,â Hissrad taunted, backing out of attack range. âThey own you. Own you, treat you and your family like animals, and youâŠwhat, you actually care about their fucking kid? Why the hell should he matter? Never mind his poor feelings.â  The elf launched himself at Hissrad with a vengeance but still he kept back, blocking and moving away.  Farad couldnât get in close enough to connect. âYou mad that I fucked up your little illusion? Or are you just upset that I called you on enjoying it?â
Farad bared his teeth and struck too low, and Hissrad saw his chance: he kicked, knocking Farad back, and followed the motion with a horizontal swing. The heavy blade was a blur; Farad shifted his grip, hands parting to let the staff take the blow rather than his fingers.
The heavy CRACK of the stave snapping in two echoed like a gaatlok blast, sharp and loud. Â Hissrad roared and pressed his advantage, swinging again and bearing down on the smaller man. Farad danced away, using the the halves of the staff to knock Hissradâs blows wide until one sweep allowed Hissrad to get a step too close. Â He pulled back on the greatsword and let go with his left hand, snagging Faradâs wrist as the elf countered with a right-handed swing. Â Hissrad clutched hard and yanked his arm up and back, Faradâs entire self following. One half of the staff fell unheld to the dirt.
A second crack split the air as Farad slammed to the ground. His arm snapped, twisted awkwardly under him; the disconcerting force of the break reverberated to Hissrad through his fingers. He felt as well as heard the bone break and he let go, stepping back as Farad gasped an invective. The wrenching twist in his gut actually gave Hissrad pause, slicing through his anger.
There was no such delay from his opponent. Â Farad was back upon him in a breath, working arm slamming into Hissradâs stomach. The air fled his lungs and he bent double, just in time for the follow-up hit to catch him in the side of the head. Â He grunted and toppled sideways, falling gracelessly, even though he rolled through it. The inertia of the roll brought him instantly back up. By the time his eyes were, though, he was a handâs breadth from a charging elf. Â Faradâs knee caught Hissrad center mass and took them both back to the ground in a pile of limbs and a cloud of dust.
One of Hissradâs arms wound up pinned beneath them. Faradâs knees spanned his chest, the remaining staff piece poised at Hissradâs throat like an assassinâs blade. Â Farad panted on top of him, dark skin going pale with pain, and Hissrad felt, of all things, a moment of uncertainty. Not anger. Something else, something he couldnât quite place as Farad stared down his nose at him, face twisted by disgust.
âWhat I am or am not matters little. What you are, matters little. All the finesse and training in Thedas mean nothing when you cannot see past your own hate. Skill and brilliance and potential, all wasted.â He gathered his legs under him and stepped back, letting Hissrad sit up. âLoyal or not, slave or not. Let the anger rule you and you will pay for it.â Hissradâs eyes drifted to Faradâs left arm, tucked protectively to his torso. Farad beat himâalways beat him, even though Hissrad was fast and talented. He knew the elfâs style, knew how he moved, and yetâŠ
Very suddenly he realized two things: for one, Farad was talking to himself just as much as he was Hissrad. For two, either way, he had a fucking point. That made something sour in Hissradâs stomach, the clarity this owned man seemed to have that he, a freeman and agent of the Qun did not.
Farad turned towards the estate without looking back.

Holy two updates in one day, Batman! Yes, this one is not nearly as fluffy, though--so be warned for that. Hissrad is (understandably) pissed about being slave to some rich 'vint and his offspring and he does not do a good job focusing that aggression in this ficlet.Â
Shout-out to @lilsoutherncuss for a big push on this one with a fight topic (thank youuuuu!!), and @cyber-fairie and @theladylily for being in my head and cheerleading like champs!! and for all of you lovely, wonderful people who send me ideas, prompts, likes and reblogs---it means the WORLD TO ME <3
Hissrad had picked up a twitch. A small one, nowhere near as telling as every other living creature around him, but his Tama would have been most displeased. He was nearly continually flexing his hands, rhythmically clenching each digit into a fist and squeezing as hard as he dared.
He was Ben-Hassrath. He was very good at what he did. Yet here he sat, a glorified babysitter for a 'vint magister's sickly offspring.
"You seem distracted today," Hissrad heard, jolted from his thoughts. He turned to find Dorian watching him. It was not one of the boy's better days: he'd been dozing more than heâd been reading the heavy tome Halward had brought him to study, and hadn't left his bed all day. Â His skin was washed out, pale and peaked, and his eyelids were already drooping even though he'd just woken up. Â
Hissrad didnât see any of that, not this this time. The lax nature of the boy's routine was just one more source of accelerant, fanning flames from the embers of his festering irritation. There were children on Seheron at risk daily from attacks that Hissrad wasn't stopping because he was stuck in Qarinus.
Here. Because of this child, his fucking parents, and the collar around Hissradâs throat.
"Is there something wrong?" Dorian persisted.
"Yeah," Hissrad growled, all ten fingers curling in anger. Dorian tipped his head a little, confused and waiting for the rest.
"Okay, so...can I...?"
"You," Hissrad snapped, "You are my problem. You and your kind. I am not meant for this, a pet for some magister and his brat. I have a role and a purpose, neither of which are here." The sleepiness faded from Dorian's face rather quickly, open surprise taking its place.
"I didn't know you are so unhappy here."
"Happy? Happy?! No one is happy to be a slave, Dorian! People are not property!" Dorian swallowed hard and dropped his gaze, his book all but forgotten as his hands knotted into his blankets.
"Our servants aren't--"
"Your servants aren't servants," Hissrad snapped. There was little for Dorian to do about it, perhaps, but his complacency and birthright meant he was part of the problem rather than its solution."Your slaves are furniture by the logic Tevinter uses. Why would I want that? Why would anyone want that?"
"I...I don't know."
"You're right, you don't," Hissrad felt his nails digging into the meat of his hands and did not care. "You don't know, and you don't care. So long as the little mage has what he wants, who cares that everyone in the house is just a tool for him and his parents to use and throw away?"
For several long moments Dorian didnât answer, didnât look up, didnât do anything save stare at his fists, all the twisting emotion of moments before gone from his face. âI think Iâm tired,â Dorian said finally, tucking his book onto his nightstand with a hand that shook, âI should...maybe take a nap.â Â He wriggled himself down into his blankets and rolled over, his back to Hissrad.
Hissrad wasnât sure what he expected, but it wasnât for Dorian to curl into a ball and not make a sound. Somehow the dismissal just made him angrier. Dorian was sleeping, clearly not at risk, so Hissrad headed for the hall, grateful to see Farad approaching. The elfâs eyes narrowed as he took in Hissradâs body language, drawn and angry, and the lack of Dorianâs presence at his side.
âHeâs sleeping,â Hissrad snapped, by way of explanation, âI have other things to do.â
âConsider yourself relieved, then,â Farad said simply, quirking an eyebrow in lieu of asking a question that Hissrad had no desire to answer. Â âYou may go in search of food or some exercise, if it pleases you.â
âIâll be outside,â he growled and for once, cared not at all that the emotions were being broadcast clear as day. Farad saw them, certainly, but what did it matter?
No one much cared what a tool felt, anyway.
---
When Farad entered the young masterâs bedroom, it was to find him in bed, much as Hissrad had claimed. The quiet sniffling told at least part of the story, as did the slight shake of the small form under the covers.
âLord Dorian?â Farad stepped to the boyâs bedside, frowning as all the sounds stopped. âWhatâs the matter?â
âI donât feel well,â Dorian murmured. It was only half a lie, as Farad was certain that was true enough...but it also did not speak to his question and both of them knew it. Â Leaning on the corner of the mattress Farad placed a hand on one small shoulder, feeling it quiver under his fingers.
âIs that all it is?â
âYes.â Â
âDorian,â Faradâs tone brokered no argument; the boy allowed himself a small, miserable noise.
â...Do you hate me?â The elfâs hand fell still, gentle motions paused in his surprise. Â
âWhat sort of nonsense is this?â Â Dorian just sniffled and buried his face in his pillows, smothering a sob. Farad circled around the bed and knelt down. Â âDorian, come now. Whatâs this about?â
âAnswer the question,â came the muffled demand, nearly as forceful as the gust of a spring sparrowâs wingbeat. Farad shook his head a bit, taking a moment to ask the Creators for strength, and leaned onto his folded arms, face not far from where Dorianâs was entombed in blankets.
âI do not hate you,â Farad supplied, voice firm and solemn. Â Dorian shuddered, made another unhappy sound, and curled tighter around his pillow as though he could meld with it, should he apply himself to the task.
â...you have to say that.â
Farad allowed himself a small chuckle. âI need do no such thing.â
âYes you do,â Dorian argued, finally lowering the pillow enough to squint at Farad, one reddened eye visible. âYouâre my slave. You have to say what I want to hear.â
âI am your slave, true,â Farad agreed, reaching up to brush the flop of dark curls from Dorianâs forehead. The skin beneath his hand was hot with fever, âbut I have no requirement to humor you, youngling. Nor did I humor your father, when he was my charge. I have never had to hold my tongue in service to your family, not within these walls, at least.â
âThat doesnât make sense. You...we own you--â
âYes, but it is every altusâs job to lie to his fellows and tell them whatever falsehood is easiest. I am a servant as well as a confidant, Dorian. I have long told your father exactly what he did not wish to hear, simply because he needed to hear it.â
âThat doesnât mean you like me.â
âWhy shouldnât I?â
âBecause no one does.â
âDorian--â
âI know I disappoint Mother and Father but I thought,â his voice cracked and he brushed Faradâs hand away with his own, scrubbing at fresh tears welling in his eyes, â-I thought that you and Miri and-â whoever else he thought to mention was swallowed by a sob, â-I thought maybe we were--â but the rest was lost as Dorian broke down crying in earnest again, sobs wracking his small frame. Running his hands through the boyâs hair just made him cry harder, as though every touch were a reminder of everything he didn't have. Farad allowed himself a small sigh, shifting to rub gentle motions on his back. Dorian hiccuped, curling himself into as tight a ball as he could; Farad just kept contact with him, soothing as best he could while the lad cried himself into an exhausted slumber.
Easing himself from the room with a frown, he called for Miri to ready some tea, and to keep an eye on the boy just in case. Dorian was sick in body--hardly new, though heâd been doing better--but the sickness in his heart, as large as it normally was, that was something else entirely.
Putting the pieces together, Faradâs frown deepened to a scowl.
For all you lovely noodles who sent me some ideas for the build to the birthday party! (also I'm late again, my job. Is. SO LAME.) Behold Dorian finally being a brat, as is proper for a nugget his age. ------ âStand still, Dorian,â Aquinea huffed, cradling her elbow on one hand and a rather full wine glass in the other. âYou mustn't fidget or you'll affect the measurements.â Her eyes are critical, ever appraising. âYes, mother,â Dorian replied dutifully, lifting his chin up as the seamstress snaked the knotted cord around him. Hissrad leaned against the far wall, hands behind him at parade rest. Heâd been leaning against the wall when Aquinea had shown up and both he and Dorian had been scolded to stand straighter. âIt must be ornate,â Lady Pavus dictated to the seamstress while circling Dorian, who was staring at the ceiling with his arms held out. âThe accents will be in...silk and silverite, perhaps.â âIn white?â Dorian asked. Bull could see the the little uptick in his expression and tone that showed the hopefulness. Odd, for something like color, but then, Hissrad was practical to a fault. Dorian cared, for some reason. âOf course not,â his mother responded. She didnât snap, but the look she gave her son said plenty, âDonât be foolish, Dorian. Nothing so garish as that. Hmm. Not silver...Dark green trimmed in gold, perhaps, with black velvet for the lining.â âAs you say, mistress,â the seamstress said, penning things down as Aquinea leaned over her shoulder. She must have been sketching because Lady Pavus kept directing little changes, making disapproving noises and gesturing as the seamstress bent over a sheaf of paper. Dorian sat down, folding his legs with a quiet huff of annoyance. He watched his mother to make sure she didnât react, and when she did not, he dropped his chin in his hands and fiddled with a small frayed string on his breeches. His hair was just long enough to curl on his forehead in the front, to his shoulders on the sides. Dorian puffed air at a strand that tumbled in front of his eye, the very picture of childhood boredom. It was a different look than Hissrad had yet seen on him. Dorian was a strange âVint (with his kind way of treating his slave caretakers) and a stranger child (in that he so rarely acted or spoke like one). It was refreshing, to see him be just a little bit petty when his mother couldnât see. Hissrad had a thought, then, and ticked a finger against his leg until Dorian noticed and caught his eye. White? He mouthed. Who wears white? Dorian glanced at his mother, still busy with the seamstress, and shrugged. His eyes kept flicking to the women, sure he was going to get caught, but he did mouth back: My parents make me wear dark colors all. the. time! Dorian pulled a face at the thought, nose scrunching up. Itâs boring. I shouldnât have to dress like everyone else! At that seemingly distressing thought, Dorian gave a second small grunt of annoyance, lip jutting out in a slight pout. There was the pampered little brat Hissrad had been expecting since being brought to the estate. Rather than finding it annoying, however, he felt one side of his mouth tug just slightly into a half-smile. Dorian saw it and narrowed his eyes, small chin lifting as his annoyance shifted. The kid didnât get out much, but still managed to level Hissrad with what he took was supposed to be a withering glare; against all Tevinterâs tendencies, Dorian had an extremely expressive face that hadnât yet been trained out of him. Well, at least itâs not black, Hissrad mouthed in Tevene. The lining is to be black! Oh nooo Hissrad lifts his brows comically, the chance of Lady Pavus turning about the only thing that kept him from making a more absurd face at Dorian as the boy scowled at him. Whatever shall the young master do? âOxman,â Aquinea says, without looking up from the seamstressâs drawing, âYouâre next. We cannot have you parading about shirtless in front of our guests.â She glances back at his one again passive visage, gesturing to the center of the room near the seamstress. âPerhaps something with puffed sleevesâŠâ Dorian did a poor job smothering his snort, gloating behind his motherâs back at the look on Hissradâs face.
Hullo you wonderful people!!! I am building to a 3-part chunk of fic for this verse and I need some help! I need a topic/thing/whatever for lil Dorian and Hissrad to get into a rather heated spat over. I haven't touched on the negative parts of their relationship yet because we're still early on, and though this is a slightly sweeter lil Dori than canon, you know he has a stubborn streak, too. So! Think of it like a prompt request, because I need A Thing to get them mad at each other before a Much Bigger Thing brings them together. Thanks!! PS--prompts for this 'verse are also much appreciated. It'll speed me up, since I am so damn newb when it comes to kid!fic ^_^ Happy, sad, fluffy or inane, send me things you want to see! I've only gotten one so far--the Bday party--and that happens to be setting for The Much Bigger Thing :3
Dâawwwww thanks anon! For you and for @scarletfoxtales who is also a lovely muffin. Thanks to @cyber-fairie and @theladylily for the pre-read :)
Have ALL THE KID FIC FLUFF.
âHissrad.â
âNo.â
âHissrad--â
âNo.â
Farad, leaning with folded arms on Dorianâs bedroom door, smothered a quiet sound that sounded almost like a chuckle. Â Dorian sat with his legs dangling off his bed, small hands still in his lap, watching the spectacle with wide-eyed wonder. His lunch was beside him, barely touched. Hissrad sat cross-legged on the floor between them, broad horns reaching higher than Miri standing at full height. The girl was in his face, brandishing something in hand, an inch from his nose. Â Hissradâs disinterest was as absolute as his spine was straight; Miriâs hair kept getting looser in its ties as she ranted.
It began as a tease but Miri had drastically miscalculated how much Hissrad despised being told what to do. He had been--and still was--Ben-Hassrath. Back on Seheron, most of his orders were vague, his action plans his own. Here, now, he did not have his freedom; he could not tell Halward Pavus where to stick his requirements. Â This tiny elf, however, had chosen poorly if she thought she could force Hissrad to do anything, let alone this.
âHissrad,â Miri said it slowly, normally sweet voice shod instead in steel.
âNo.â Disinterested green eyes stared back at her, level and unmoved. Miriâs looked very nearly ready to catch fire. She startled visibly as an idea struck.
âLord Dorian!â Hissradâs eyes flicked towards the bed; Dorian actually levitated a bit, startled at being engaged directly. Â Hissrad had seen the boy trotted out like a prize hound to rattle off thaumaturgical facts in front of several visiting magisters without flinching. All that, not a problem. The tiny elf servant barking at him, though? Clearly not something he was prepared for. Â He actually squeaked, a curl of dark hair flopping onto his forehead. âYou can order him to do it!â
Dorian looked at Hissrad, small face open. Hissrad quirked one eyebrow a fraction of an inch, his own look impassive. Dorianâs expression went blank and he tucked his fist to his mouth, clearing his throat politely in a stark imitation of his father.
âThat seems...unwise.â Â Farad made a noise under his breath. Miri ignored him, deciding instead to go back to menacing Hissrad directly.
âEat. The. Cake.â
âNope.â Â
âDo it!â
âNo.â
Miri slipped into a dialect Hissrad didnât recognize, spitting a string of flowing anger. Cursing was obvious, no matter the language.
âYou are stubborn as a bull,â she hissed, placing the small plate on the side table with an exasperated sigh. Â âI cannot believe you! Try to do something nice for someone...â
The room sat in stillness for a long several seconds. Hissradâs face stayed blank; Farad looked to be smothering a grin still, lines carved deep at the corners of his eyes. Â Miri was still hissing, busying herself with gathering up odds and ends on the other side of the room. Â And Dorian--
Dorian eased himself off his bed, face now as impassive as his rather prestigious breeding often required. Â He moved to the side table and retrieved the small plate, snagging a fork and walking over to Hissradâs sitting spot. The were roughly eye to eye. Hissrad could see the gears turning in Dorianâs head, could see that he was pondering but not yet sure of his course of action. Â They stared at one another, master and slave, almost on level footing. Â Again Hissrad wondered more than once at the oddness of the string of behaviors heâd seen from the lad in his months as Dorianâs bodyguard.
Dorian moved just slightly, the fork clinking as he raised the plate. Â
âWould you like a bite, Hissrad?â Dorian asked. Â Hissrad couldn't help it; his eyebrows leapt upright. Dorian, expression wavering not an inch, raised a bit of fluffy pastry to Hissradâs face.
Hissrad took the bite, humming in the back of his throat at the sweet burst of flavor across his tongue, so unlike the food they had in Par Vollen, so unlike everything else heâd ever tasted. Â It was fantastic.
âSâgood,â he admitted, and the honesty cracked Dorianâs visage. Â His grey hazel eyes lit up and he grinned while Miri, across the room, made a sound of outrage. Farad laughed outright, ducking the pillow his neice sent sailing his way. Hissrad felt the second pillow snag on the tip of one horn, accepting another bite from Dorian without bothering to hide his smirk.

Ur going to continue with the kid au right? right????
Sure am! You wonderful muffin :)
Kid!AU:Dorian wants to help. He also wants his bodyguard to like himÂ
....(AKA inane fluff ahoy!)
Hissrad was there, sitting nearby and looking nearly bored out of his skull. It was one of the few expressions he ever allowed anyone to see, that heavy veil of pervasive boredom. He didn't fidget the way Dorian did during long dinners with awful relatives, though, nor nod off the way the boy had done once or twice while learning Ancient Tevene and listening to recitations for hours.
Despite his age Dorian had been trained all his life both to read emotions on the faces of others and simultaneously keep his own buried as deeply as possible; he was an Altus, after all. Â Heâd watched his father and mother have rows without either of them cracking so much as a frown: something to aspire to himself, one day when he was married and carrying on the family legacy. Â All his training sorted him towards being as flawless as a marble statue, as implacable as the tides. Â He was a Pavus, meant to be poised and powerful and polished. Â
âYou donât like it here.â Â Dorian said it quietly, placing his book pages-down on his tummy, over top of the blankets. Â Even given all his careful rearing, Hissradâs blank expression was something outside his experience entirely. The Qunari was changeless, features set in a neutrality that made Dorianâs hands itch. Â He could not glean anything from the manâs body language.
âNo.â
Dorian swallowed hard, fiddling nervously with the edge of the tome, a large, boring thing about glyphs his father had told him to read. He was curious to a fault, heâd been told as much many times, but he couldnât help it. Â Hissrad was so big, horned and muscular and quiet and just...huge. He was the embodiment of everything Dorian had ever been told of his race and yet, that control, the careful absence of reaction, spoke to training not unlike his own. Dorian had never seen a Qunari up close, let alone having one in his room for hours a day.
He had so many questions. Best to offer something first, though, much as his father had taught him. There were no concessions without leverage or offerings.
â...Is there anything I can do?â Â The bodyguard actually looked a little surprised at that, cocking one eyebrow.
âDo? About what?â
âYou donât like it here. I could help. Can you read Tevene?â Â When Hissrad dipped his head in a nod Dorian visibly brightened, leaning off the side of of his bed with his slippered feet kicking the air. Â There was much rustling as he shuffled through the stack of books at his bedside, panting with exertion when he finally righted himself. He had a weathered brown volume clutched in his hands. Â âItâs a book about the history of the region. Qarinus, and the sea.â Â He held it out toward Hissrad. Â âMaybe reading will help you...fit in a bit more?â
âTrying to keep me busy, huh? Trying to divert my attention so you can sneak off?â Â Dorian sputtered but Hissrad just waved him off. Â âYou think reading will help me not be bored,â he stated, as though requesting clarification.
âItâs...ah, well, itâs a bit boring, honestly,â Dorian remarked, a little bit of pink edging into his dark cheeks. Â âI can get you a better one later, if itâs not to your taste. We can go the library and pick something else out. Father mostly makes me read things for my studies. Nothing fun.â He allowed himself a disgruntled noise at that, missing the adventure stories that had dotted his childhood once.
âYouâre a strange little âVint,â Hissrad murmured, shaking his head as he took the book from Dorianâs outstretched hand, appraising it before settling down on the floor cross legged. He glanced at Dorian one final time, a sidelong look with those sharp eyes, his expression a slightly soft thing. The slight change was noticeable, even on his chiseled features.
There was a flicker of warmth there, now. Dorian was certain of it. Â Smiling a little to himself, he picked up his book on glyphs and started reading.
Hissrad is incredulous and younger than he thinks. The damn 'Vints still make no sense. Sorry for the delay! Now that the work hell that is the holidays are over we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming. A couple of you sent wondrous ideas that I am absolutely gonna use! ------ âIf you donât watch it, your face will stick like that.â Hissradâs hands flexed, tightening on his kneecaps. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor of the servantsâ quarters while another of the Pavusâs Elvhen slaves, Miri, fussed. She was standing on her tiptoes as she dabbed at his burned face with a rag dipped in elfroot potion. Her mouth was quirked a little in a smile, and she had Faradâs eyes. âThey sent in a courier and she tried to attack him,â Hissrad growled under his breath. It was not unusual for outside slaves to be in the Pavus manor: deliveries, message runs, there were often people cycling in out of the estate that heâd never seen. Most were gone before he had a chance to interact with them. Hissrad knew he was bought to be a bodyguard, but this...the entire thing made no sense. Dorian was a child, not out in the world enough to instigate with anyone, so who would bother? Most Tevinter culling was either for blood magic or political gain, but Hissrad failed to see the benefit of the apparent target on his charge. ...not that he wanted to understand these bastard âVints, but it was his job to do so until he managed to regain his freedom. Might as well make the most of it, catalogue what he could to take back to Par Vollen to report. Miriâs smile wavered, slipping into something far more concerned. âIt is no laughing matter, true, but...you would do well to get used to it.â She reached for his face and gasped as he snatched her wrist. ââGet used to it?ââ Shaking a little at his snarl, she nodded. âTevinter wants only the best,â Miri informed him. âThe Lord and Lady do what they can but they are strict. Our young master does his best but it is...not enough, it seems.â Afterward, out in the hallway, the bodyguard eyed Faradâs impassive countenance with a scowl. âThe fuck was that about?â Hissrad questioned Farad in Common, not wanting to bother with Tevene. âMiri talks in circles.â âShe is young yet, she need not understand completely,â Farad replied, dark eyes pensive. âShe is my niece, did you know?â Hissrad shook his head. It was odd, he thought, for so many of the Pavus slaves to be related. It matched nothing heâd heard about Tevinter. The older slave took Hissradâs quiet to mean he was lost. so he replied: âIt is as I told you. The extended family does not feel Lord Dorian is a fitting heir to the legacy of House Pavus. They believe him to be weak, unfit to carry on the name. If he is gone, a lesser cousin could stand to inherit.â Farad ran a hand over his braid, fiddling with the end. âHe would be the best of them, if theyâd only allow it.â âWould,â Hissrad noted. Not âcould.â Farad was certain of Dorian and that simple truth made Hissrad uncertain about a thousand other things. He did not care, that he was quick to remind himself, but it was critical that he know. Knowing meant surviving and that was all he had to do. He swallowed a dozen questions and settled instead on: âFucking âVints.â Farad loosed a huffed laugh, both agreement and exasperation. âSpeaking of such,â he segwayed, âLord Dorian asked after your health.â âSure he did,â Hissradâs mouth quirked in a half-sneer, remembering the look on Dorianâs face earlier, all wide eyes and clenched hands. âHeâs terrified of me, afraid of the big bad Qunari.â All his curiosity shot down in a moment...it certainly had not taken much. Farad interrupted the recollection by laughing at him outright, shaking his head as he left the Qunari staring after him in the hallway. âSo certain of yourself, Hissrad,â the elf chided as he walked away. âFor one named spy, you think very little at times.â

It was not the first attack that had happened. Hissrad knew this. The servants, Halward, hell, even Dorian had told him this. (At the last, he had to fight more of that anger welling in his chest, so often lurking there, anymore).
It was, however, the first attack Hissrad had been present for.
Most of the servants followed a protocol, amended slightly for his presence. They entered, nodded to him, then continued to Dorianâs bedside with whatever books or practice work they were delivering. The same went for the servants that brought the meals, since Dorianâs wavering constitution meant he often took his meals his room. The kid being waited on hand and foot still made Hissrad want to scowl.
The familiar glower twisted his features as the small Elvhen woman stepped into the room, tray in hand. She ignored Hissrad in his place by the wall completely, head canted down and walking more briskly than someone with a bowl of soup pouring steam ought to walk. Her shoulders were tight, drawn down; her clothes were dark and fitted. Alarm bells in his head stiffened Hissradâs spine, not long enough gone from Seheron to miss the multiple warning signs. He was validated when the shift of cloth caused by one footstep revealed the pattern of a dagger sheath under the womanâs shirt. By then he was already moving.
The elf saw him coming. Hissrad was fast but the woman was too. He lunged, heavy form slamming into hers, but not before sheâd twisted to brace for it, one foot sliding back to set her stance. It wouldnât be enough, he knew, not given the size differential. He was a good two feet taller and heavier by double, but heâd forgotten one variable. Hissrad realized as such as the scalding hot liquid hit his face. He snarled an epithet in Qunat and dropped.
The elf shrieked a curse in Elven as she tripped, the sweep of one of Hissradâs legs taking both of hers out from under her. Time seemed to stretch around him as Hissrad listenedâTHERE, the sound of metal sliding free of leatherâbut even as he wrenched his eyes open past the sear of burnt skin, a flare of bright light obscured his vision.
The elf threw the knife, suddenly glowing white-hot, the metal skipping like an awkward stone. Not quickly enough: the smell of cooking meat, stomach-twisting and familiar, rose in the air. Hissrad snorted the smell out of his nose and dove as soon as he reached his knees. His bulk hit the elf center mass, a sentient battering ram, slamming her squirming form to the floor.
By the time Dorianâs bedroom door got kicked open Hissrad had the woman pinned with one huge hand on the nape of her neck. The other was clenched in a fist around a cane Dorian used on his weaker days. In the breath it took him to lift his eyes Hissradâs mind was already running full speed, a predator pressed into a full counter-attack.
Slam her head on the floor, half-step left to cut off the route to the bed. Get a count, hit as hard as it takes to bring the whole group down in one lunge. If impossible, keep horns down, gore the first one through the door. Trip the second and third with arms and legs, trip up stragglers with caneâ
The thoughts abruptly pulled up short as he registered Farad as a friendly and not a foe. The manâs eyes quickly panned the room, checking over Hissrad with a blatant question in them.
âYouâre hurt.â
âIâm fine.â
âYouâre sure?â Farad questioned. Hissrad nodded with a grunt. As he gathered the Elvhen womanâs wrists behind her back, thin bones straining in his grip, Farad moved past him. The elf had a naked sword in one hand and carried it like one who knew how to use it, grip relaxed but ready. âAre you alright, Lord Dorian?â
âFine,â a small voice replied. Hissrad glanced over his shoulder in surprise at the young âVintâs calmness. His grey-hazel eyes were wide in his small face but at Hissradâs gaze, he straightened a little. and pushed his dark locks The would-be attacker thrashed in his grip fruitlessly as Hissrad processed the scene back through his mind, analyzing with a Ben-Hassrathâs clarity of detail.
âYou lit the knife on fire?â
Dorian shook his head, gesturing at the weapon lying at the foot of his armoire. The small human was staring at Hissrad in open concern. Frightened, likely, but heâd handled it well in the moment. Not bad. âI heated the metal.â Hissrad nodded even though the distinction didnât matter much. He turned back to the door just as Halward Pavus swept through it, his face dark with fury.
âWith me,â he ordered. For once, Hissrad didnât hesitate.
