It’s a bit dizzying to try and parse through the field of beat tapes these days. Sample-sourcing has seemed to touch every single musical genre at this point. I guess we’ve all got enough digital tools and source material to stop playing instruments altogether. Thankfully, this debut by Kiefer on Leaving Records emerges from the ticker.
California-based pianist/producer Kiefer’s Kickinit Alone was out in March but didn’t actually ship until June. I’ve probably spun this 20 times just this month. It’s all the soulful placidity of Ahmad Jamal’s “Poinciana” clipped and looped with a bobbing beat, a standout for the year thus far.
