Like when I got my first mantis, and opened up the little deli cup she came to me in, and she immediately clambered out onto my hand? It was over. I was so enchanted. I fell in love.

They're such delicate little creatures, and they have such limited understanding. They don't feel love, appreciation, trust, affection, or any of the familiar emotions we sometimes mistakenly attribute to them.

But there is something so heartwarming about a creature which does realize you are alive and possesses the ability to perceive you as a threat sitting contentedly on your hand, relaxed enough to start grooming itself.

I've loved and been around animals my entire life and it is an ENTIRELY different kind of interaction. The perspective they have given me is valuable. So many more millions of years separates us from insects that its like making contact with aliens compared to interacting with cats, but they still remind me of cats.

It doesn't bother me at all that these animals don't even possess the ability to like or appreciate me, I don't need them to love me for me to love them. But I'd be lying if I said I don't get emotional when one feels safe in my presence.

The new challenger? All she does is win ★
