short answer: he's BLACK
long answer: he’s just...interesting. his backstory, his personality, his decision to love naruto with his whole heart in the few scenes that he gets. it’s so fun seeing someone kind without the need to force them to open up/go past their walls aka be a giant asshole or naruto having to prove himself...iruka didn't treat him horribly but he needed that convo with mizuki to actually accept naruto into his life since the two of them have no one else and naruto REALLY needed iruka in his life
books aren't canon but iruka saying “naruto put meaning into my existence as much as i did to his” really really hit the nail on the head
