FINAL THOUGHTS ON ASSIGNMENT 2
OVERVIEW OF ASSIGNMENT 1: AIM OF THE WEB-PRODUCT AS PER THE ASSIGNMENT 1 PROPOSAL:
Adoptapet.com is an interactive desktop and tablet based, web-product that supports the wants and needs of the Australian community, in relation to finding a suitable pet for themselves or their family.
As the problem with overpopulation regarding domestic pets rises, the need for the community to support animal rescue programs by welcoming a rescued pet into their home, instead of supporting the trade of purpose bred domestic pets, becomes more prominent each day.
Adoptapet.com has been developed to provide a positive user experience that streamlines the process of adopting a pet in the hope that it will encourage more adoptive behaviour. The application aims to be both informative and helpful while also being an intuitive and interesting experience for the user.
- be a service that is open to the lifestyle of the user in terms of allowing for both at home and on the go use. And has been created with three main user groups in mind. These are; the elderly, families and young couples or singles. Incorporating large buttons, text and images.
- supply a hub of information to the user, that streamlines the process of adoption into one simple and intuitive interface.
- allow the user to create a profile and save their input data (enabling the user to refine the search tool and results generated) for ease of use.
- allow the user to save their favourite or shortlisted animals for quick reference at a later date or time.
- resolve the issues noticed in similar web-products in regards to; their lack of professionalism, lack of interesting user experience and interface design, as well as improving their unintuitive interface design.
- provide a streamlined, high quality search system, that allows the user to determine the level of refinement of input data from quiet broad to very specific, to ultimately provide accurate results based on the users wants and needs.
- become a trustworthy and professional resource that is informative, simple to use and provides a surprising and exciting user experience through its interfacedesign.
- and ultimately, create an interface design that understands the wants and needs of the user and contributes to the effective engagement, interpretation andinteraction of the user when adopting a pet.
SUCCINCT INTRODUCTION TO WEB-PRODUCT: AIM OF THE WEB-PRODUCT AS PER THE ASSIGNMENT 2 WEB-PRODUCT:
The aims of the web-product created are exactly the same to those in the proposal in Assignment 1. The website would be a simple to use, simply formatted web-product that assists users in finding a pet through a simple search, save, review and apply concept. A number of changes were made to the user interaction and functionality of the web-product during the process of creating ADOPTYOURPET.COM due to two major factors: My skill level and the time frame, as well as, the tips and feedback given regarding assignment 1. These changes are: REGARDING FEEDBACK FROM TUTOR AND FURTHER INVESTIGATION: - The placement and style of the navigation bar was changed from the bottom of the page to the top. This was due to what the user will be more familiar with and also what the user expects when using a website. By having the navigation at the bottom, it almost puts the website upside down and can harm the flow of the user experience. Also, any other navigation that was required was made a part of the navigation bar, for instance, the “Results” navigation from the prototype was not a part of this bar, it was difficult to see, on the wrong side of the screen to take the user “back” and also was not accessible from everywhere on the site. This has been changed in the web-product for assessment 2. - Changes to areas of the navigation aesthetic. I changed any internal navigation to look the same and also look nothing like any other elements of the design as in the prototype the from Assessment 1, there were some elements of the navigation that were difficult to see and or, to decide whether they were or were not navigation in the first place, therefore, the change has helped the flow and user experience. - Removal of unnecessary pages in in the process as this would harm the flow and user experience. One page would be: The Confirmation page when applying for an animal from their profile. This page was not necessary as it was a simple process to click cancel on the next page if the user had indeed made a mistake, including this page just lengthened the process unnecessarily. - I have kept the horizontal scroll aspect of the site but have ditched the parallax scroll animation. I felt this would over complicate the website too much. - I have added in hover and click effects on the search refinement system and also on some of the images in the web-product as they assist the user in determining what exactly they are looking at and also may uncover some encouraging/ persuasive information about adopting pets.
REGARDING SKILL LEVEL: - Removal of many search fields. Initially I just chose to focus on dogs and included only 3 search areas to refine this search. This was partly due to skill level, as I was not able to make the page longer then a certain amount of px due to the horizontal scrolling navigation. It made the page difficult to work with if there was not a visible “Search” button at the bottom. Future opportunities for this page would be to include more animals and more search refinement options for users.
- Changes to areas of the aesthetic. For instance the sign in page has changed from having green transparent boxes on it to having just a simple form log in. This was due to time constraints mostly. USE CASE SCENARIO:
In regards to my use case scenario and user interaction with the web-product, the website allows for the user to navigate through the entire website and simulates the user operating the search refinement fields, searching for animals, results appearing, they are then able to click on an animal’s name to see its profile or click on the animal’s photo to save it has a favourite, then they are able to continue adding more animals to the favourites or apply for the animal. Once this has occurred, the user can see any appointments they have on the appointments page to meet the animals in person and are able to cancel if needed from this page. The user is also able to contact the company through the contact page or log out through the settings page.
