History: Beside the Red Light District in Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Chinatown area consists of a number of city blocks crammed with Asian markets, restaurants and shops. The first Chinese arrived in The Netherlands around 1900 to work as sailors, and stokers on large Dutch steamships. In between contracts, the Chinese workers gathered in Amsterdam around this area. The Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple, built in 2000, is the largest religious building in Chinese style in Europe. The design was made by a Dutch architect.
